Running SCSI backplane without the rest?

i tried a 2450 with no backplane +used a terminated cable +it worked ok,conversely only

a small message (error no backplane)showed on boot but it didn't slow/stop the server from operating in any way.conversely if the bios doesn't allow boot with no backplane,just connect it +place somewhere else in the bay +use terminated cables instead.other option is to disable onboard scsi (if you plan to use a scsi card /ide controller instead)

assuming you got the 68pin on your planar/controller,+your running 80pin hotswap drives,

you needs a 68pin multidevice cable  with the lvd rated or better terminator affixed(1 per chain)+it supports up to as many devices the cable can fit,also you may need  some 68 pin to 80 pin lvd hdd adapters for the cable to fit (1 adapter per hard drive drive)+lvd atleast as they are backward compatable with hvd protocol too,thus allows for future upgrade to u160 etc(controller /drives permitting),conversely if you got 68 pin hdds on hand theres no need for the adapters.

But there is one thing I don't get. The HDDs have no power connector (I guess they got their power via the backplane?) -> do they get the entire power with the scsi cable, too? I mean...there are six disks and they might use a lot from the power supply! I need no extra-stuff for that problem?

this is what a 68-80 pin adapter can do,(it includeds a power connector bit so you can convert the hotswap hdds to coinnect as if they are 68 pin drives,but with 6 drives,but you may  need a few 2 -3 into 1 power connector adapters so you can connect power to the 68-80 pin scsi  adapters.
