SAS 6/ir physical disk state failed?

Hi,

I am struggling with a DELL SAS HDD. I just installed it and got a Failed in the OpenManage server administrator console straight away and the size shown in the extended view is 0. I have checked the connections and tried in other bays of the server and still get the failed state.

The server is a 2950 with windows 2012 and a SAS 6/ir. I can see the drive in the device manager but not in the disk management console.

I don't know much about SAS but I find a funny behavior with the device manager and the SAS controller: if I disable the drive in the device manager, then the drive shows Ready in the console of OpenManage and shows all the information in the extended view.

I have tried to update the firmware of the drive to the last version with a DELL update but I get an error saying: the operation failed due to an invalid image file. However, it did update the firmware of three other identical drives that just work fine.

Is there any way to know what is the problem with the drive? Failed is just too open and ambiguous... Any advise?

Thank you very much in advance.

Hi Josh,

thank you for your reply.

I have not had any opportunity to set up anything with the drive as it just does not come active. It goes into Failed straight away. The drive is just an upgrade to the server for more capacity.

I have downloaded the utility from the link and run it as you indicate. The test on the problematic drive finishes rather quickly and the result is: "Test failed. Ensure that the device is configured properly and run this test again. if this problem persist, it indicates a hardware issue. Error Code: 45158 Validation Code: 151633

Hope this makes sense...

Did you create a new array when you added the drive or was it replacing a previously failed disk? You can run our hard drive diagnostics to test the drive. http://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER01456532M/1/dell-onlinediags-win32-2.30.0.70.exe

Install this and choose the GUI version. On the left pane select the controller and then on the bottom right pane select quick test and run tests.

I did go already to the ctrl+c option but could not do anything... Seems like bad news... :(

If that test fails right away it usually indicates a bad drive, which is consistent with the failed message that you are receiving. You can also reboot and go into the controller with ctrl+C and see if there are any available tasks for the drive to clear the drive, but it most likely needs to be replaced.
