SATA / SAS Backplane
I recently bought a Dell R520 with SAS Backplane (Part # 0XP569) with two SAS cables (Part # 0M7DP4) connected to the motherboard.
Since I am very new to Dell Servers, I was not sure what HDDs are compatible. I connected a brand new 1TB SATA SSD with a 6Gb/s SATA interface and the caddy got amber light and the error code I got was PDR1001 error.
I was planning to use this as a Virtualisation / Home NAS setup and I was planning on purchasing four 6TB SATA NAS HDD and the boot disk as SATA SSD.
A basic internet search mentions SATA can be used on the SAS backplane. If I am wrong, can you please provide a solution for the same?

R520 support SAS and SATA drives. Below table have the details. You can also refer below link for technical specification
Up to eight 3.5 inch or 2.5 inch, internal, hot-swappable SAS, SATA, SAS SSD. SATA SSD, or Nearline SAS hard drives in hard-drive slots 0 through 7.
Up to four 3.5 inch or 2.5 inch, internal, hot-swappable SAS, SATA, SAS SSD, SATA SSD, or Nearline SAS hard drives in hard-drive slots 0 through 3 for a software RAID system.

What storage controller you have on the server? Is the drive you are using or planning to use is from Dell. Non dell drives are not supported on PowerEdge Server. Not supported does not mean it will not work. As it is not supported it is not validated, hence we can not guarantee that it will work. You can also wait for another Community member who tried this combination and share their experience.
