SSD M.2
Hi,
So we are looking in to buying a pair of new servers with SSD drives and I have a few questions.
1. We are a small company about 70 users and I am wondering if for example a (6 x 3.84TB U.2 NVMe Express Flash Read Intensive drives in Raid10) would have enough durability for about a max 400~500GB of writes a day or do we need mixed use drives?
Both Servers will be running VMware Esxi with about 12 virtual machines, a few file servers but nothing io intensive. We keep the servers for 7 years (with warranty)
2. Are the M.2 drives the way to go or would SSD SAS 12Gbps would be also sufficient for our needs?
3. Can i configure the m2 array with Raid 10 and what perc is recommended for that?
Thank you

Hello @Rygar1 ,
your ans are as :-
1. Yes.(can also increase the disk cap).
2. SSDs are sufficient as per the Req.
3. controller (RAID Controller S140)
My personal suggestion is to get in touch with dell sales rep to get better clarity and the best hardware for your needs.
Regards
Singh

A S140 is a Software based Controller and its not well support by vSphere ESXi. If you thinking of a HW Raid and ESXi you should take a look for a H755N.
With your requirements a RAID 10 NVMe sounds oversized..... RAID6 and a bunch of RI SATA/SAS 1.92TB SSD will save a lot if $$$. But as always it depends on your needs and budget.
Dont mix M.2 and U.2 The later is the 2.5" oriented design which you will find in Server from Dell,HPE because they are changable without opening the server chassis compared to the M.2 format which will used on your Playstation, Laptop or Office/Gamer PC.

Joerg
