SSD or Classic Rotating disk ???

Hi Community.

I actually have 2 dell servers (others are HPE)

1 - PE640 / Perc H730P Mini (mini ???) / 6 DELL SSD SAS 12g 480 Gb disk

2 - PE440 / Perc H730P / 9 DELL HDD SAS 12g 15K 600 Gb disk

My question is simple. I have same read/write performance on both server and i need to upgrade capacity on server 1. The price difference between HDD and SSD is 3 (hdd 119 euros) SSD (470 euros).

So what is the goal to use SSD ??????

P.S : We have buy server 1 for SQL Performance needs, but due to change in company, we need more space rather than performance.

Hello,
"I have same read/write performance on both server and i need to upgrade capacity on server 1. -> In my humble opinion I don't think this makes sense or possible.  SSDs and SAS' are worlds different and they can't be compatible. I don't know what the other community users would think and we can wait around to see.

I'm sorry DELL-Young E ,perhaps your are too YOUNG to make a good response, but this is a snapshot of my hard drive. I'm not drunk when i write. My question was What is the advantage of use SSD if i have same perf on both server. Classical HDD are 3 time cheaper than ssd

Hi @Phoenix40,

 

YoungAh is right in stating that it's not possible to achieve the same read/write performance on HDD and SSD.

 

The difference here might be the test done on the number of disks between the SSD and HDD.

 

While the SSDs are 6 and the HDDs are 9, the controller writes/reads to all the disks simultaneously.

 

We might see a difference when you measure against an equal number of SSD and HDDs.

 

If your goal is to have more storage than performance, I would suggest you go with the HDD disks as offer more storage capacity.

Thanks for this technical response. Effectively with 2 more SSD (8) i can achieve more speed, but HDD is 3 or 4 time cheaper, for more space. But i'm surprised that i cant have a significant difference between HDD and SSD.

That's the pure truth.

Server 1: 9 disk (600gb/15k/12g sas) 

Server 2 : 4 disk (480g/12g/ssd sas)

Server 2 : 4 disk (900g/6g/sata dell)

 

All the same perf. I think H730 is in cause. H730 mini on server 2. H730 on server 1.

All cache activated. Horrible perf without.

No problem. But just review my photos and just tell DELL to change their markup on disk case. All that was described in this article, i know it from long time. What i dont undestand is why i cant have significant perf on my SSD.

I clear and simple reponse can be "Perc H730 cant make you have more than xxxxMb/sec read or write". That a clear and technical response. Nevermind article that tell me things i know from 10 or 15 years.
