7B is usually a controller driver issue.

How are you installing? Booting to the Dell Server Installation Disk and then switching in the Windows CD, or booting to the Windows CD (and are you then adding the PERC driver with the F6 option)?

You may have to build a new ISO with SP2 integrated to be able to install Windows on this system too.

Hi,

When I try using the SMTD disk it tells me I have inserted an invalid cd please insert the correct disc, but if I install straight from 2003 cd I get the BSOD. Not sure how I would use the F6 option to load the drivers as the server does not have a floppy disk drive.

i have also tried disabling nics if that does anything.

In the meantime I have called dell they have asked me to download the latest SMTD iso from the site version 6.3 the version on my cd is 6.1.

Thanks

You need the correct version of the SMTD/SBUU installation utility and the proper SP level for it to work.  Also, SMTD/SBUU usually does not work with VL media (downloaded from Microsoft's eopen website).

7b is a storage-related driver issue - if installing directly from the Windows CD on a 2970, you will need TWO drivers loaded via floppy at the F6 prompt:

RAID Driver:

If you have the SAS 6/iR:

If you have the PERC 5i/6i:

Then you will also need the Broadcom HT1000/1100 Driver (for the CD/DVD drive):

If you do not have a floppy disk/drive, you can use nLiteOS.com to integrate BOTH drivers (and SP2 while you're at it).

Yep, 7b means that windows can't find your boot device/hard drive. Nlite is a really usfull tool to integrate drivers and service packs into one build cd.

There is also a dell tool called F6 prep utility, this will make a usb flash stick into a pseudo floppy device allowing you to press F6 during install and load the required drivers from the usb stick.

The drivers required are listed in theflashes post.

actually, you need this. Because you are using a non-sp2 w2k3 version, you need an older version of the SBUU to help you install the OS. This version of SBUU below used w2k3 (no sp) and so your OS disc that you have been using will work just fine with it. of course the best thing is to use the nlite to integrate Sp2 into a new disc, and then SMTD v 6.2 will probably work, I havent tried Nlite.

Oh and during the installation with SBUU, watch for a checkbox that says to add Server Administrator, make sure to deselect that. You can install a later version of OMSA at a later time.

Hi,

thanks for the replies I have managed to move forwards a little now but I am still having problems.

I downloaded the f6 prep  tool and used this to load the driver 6i/and Sata chipset controller (installing straight from win 2003 cd).

I now dont get the bsod and can choose to install win on my harddrive, but as soon as it starts it asks again for the Broadcom HT1000 Sata controller which I thought I had already loaded. But if I try to load again from the USB Stick it is unable to see it.

Thanks again.

You are going to need to use nLiteOS or a floppy ... the F6 Key Prep utility is great but a bit flaky.

Hi thanks

I have used nlite and intergrated the drivers, I am able to format the hard driver and the setup copies the files, but the next stage the server wants to restart, after this I get the following error :

" setup was unable access files needed to continue. This could be caused by an error on the CD Media or the CD is no longer present in the drive"

Has the cd drive lost its driver, is there any way round this?

Thanks for the help, this has turned out to be the longest ever installation of an os ever.

Many thanks

With a basic understanding of what is required to install an OS on ANY hardware, installing an OS is fairly easy on any Dell server.  There are a few systems with very specific "issues" to address, like the 2970, T410, T605, etc.  In most cases the installation utility can simplify installation, but it too has its limitations (VL media, SP levels, etc.).

Thanks for all the posts, I have now managed to get win 2003 installed, I used N lite to load the Broadcom Sata Controller and the Perc 6 drivers, but for some unknown reason after the first reboot on installing 2003 the DVD drive would not work even with the driver loaded. So all I did was plug an IDE dvd rom in the server and installed from this, which seems to have done the trick.

Thanks again for the replies. Are all dell servers this much of an nightmare to install an OS on or is it just me?
