Cannot access to http://companyweb from any workstations
Hi everyone,
Please help this novice; I cannot resolve this simple problem…
We only use this server (700 with SBS 2003) for file sharing.
We have a cable connection, a Linksys router, and this server and five workstations are connected to the router.
Here is a problem; I can access “http://companyweb” with IE on the server, but cannot access from any workstations.
I can see a welcome page by going the server’s IP address, but when I click a “My Company's Internal Web Site” link on this page, I get a “The page cannot be displayed” page. Same thing happens when I just type “http://companyweb” on any workstations.
I checked a “wwwroot” folder, but those files are not easy to understand for me who has been only dealing with an UNIX or Mac server. Anyway, a "Companyweb" folder is in both “wwwroot” and "inetpub" folders.
Since we don’t want a headache foe security issues, we would like to access to this intarnet only locally.
What am I doing wrong???

I speak from experience on this one NIC deal. I banged my head against the wall for two weeks fighting a one NIC setup. Spent $10 on a second NIC and was up and going in 45 minutes with DDNS running and full access from the internet.
Security is a concern, but if you use strong passwords and good router security, you will be okay.

Several reasons
1) The office is an owner's basement (countryside), and cannot get static IP (or too expensive).
2) When an old server died, we just bought this server (SBS came with it).
3) We don't want to deal with any security headaches.
4) We have a shared server from an ISP (not a cable company) for all domains (he own few small companies); email, website, FTP.
5) If we ask a dealer to configure it, forget it...
I really need help!

We only have one ethernet card, and are not using DNS. Each machine including the server is connected to the router which is connected to the cable modem.
Please help!!

We are not supposed to have downstream traffic unless you buy a static IP. I also think a cable company will find it out quickly (we have so many files (3-10MB) going in and out).
Anyway, I just want to use a "sharing point" system, and don't understand why it accessible on the server, but not from workstations...

You don't need a static IP. You can Dynamic DNS. Google No-IP.com . Basically, you install a very samll program that monitors you currect dynamci address and reports it back to the NO-IP servers that hold the DNS records. Domain registration and DDNS runs about $50 annually.
Alos, if you read that article, SBS setup is a snap with two NICS and a headache with one.

The Share Point Site (My Company Web) will be accessible if you go back thru the setups again. Did you go thru the Connect wizard?
The cable company will never notice those small files. However, you need to check and see if they are blocking Ports 53 and 80 if you want to use DDNS.
