CERC5 Controller how to change the write cache on
Hello Forum,
i am using a PowerEdge 1800 with a buildin SATA-CERC5 controller. The machine is installed with SuSE 9.1
Could someone tell me how i can turn on the write cache (read cache is already on).
I only have installed all around the afacli-tool.
The managementsoftware from dell was not working on SuSE.

The RPMs installed without error, but I cannot access my CERC sata controller.

first step is to get totally drunk! --> very important, i tested it.
second installation : tar xvfz afaapps-2.6-0.tar.gz

IMPORTANT: change to "/dev" not to the unpacked created direcory!!!

Now do an: /tmp/raid/dev/MAKEDEV.afa afa0 (if you were extracting the files in this folder)
It is creating a device --> "/dev/afa0"
USE now the executable: /tmp/raid/usr/sbin/afacli (and / or copy afacli to /usr/sbin)
type now: "open afa0"
some other hintful commandos are:
container list
container show cache 0
container set cache /unprotected=FALSE 0
disk show space
container list
controller details
disk list
disk show defects /full=true (0,1,0)

After completing the first step, I re-read every piece of documentation that came with my 1800, and searched through every CROM that came with the machine for:
"afaapps*"
and there was nothing. How would anybody know what to do without your post, Krischeu???
I put in the file in the DELL search, and found some dudes web site that had a link to that file. I installed, and it seems to work some of the time...
....BUT....
NOW, the system is locking up the CLI often. Ever since adding that /dev/... file, these commands lock up the bash CLI:
w
ps -auxw
Could there be a conflict with the open manage RPMs I installed earlier?
This is really frustrating!!!!

what is about your dell-support? --> yes i know, only a joke.
They can't give me a help tooo. I installed it on SuSE because of our environment.
I tested it with Debian, a little better performance, courious they are using the same driver fron adaptec.
If you have the possibility, do NOT use the CERC5 controller with DELL, you should change to hewlett packard -- good linux support for less.
I was testing this 5 weeks and the result is: totaly s-h#i-t hardware from dell with no support from their technicals.
So i was searching by myself for a solution. The problem seems to be the on 2 sides!!
On the one hand is the driver for the controller. Which version are you using? 2.7.1 or newer? --> it is a must to use a newer driver, you have to register on dell and than you can download the actual driver and firmware. HINT update the firmware!!
The second thing is the chipset on the mainboard. If you are copying much small files it is fast enough. But if you have a look with xosview (you should download and install it) or if you look at "top" the waitstaits are at 90 to 100 % !!! This problem is really a problem if you are copying hughe files (more than 1 GB). If so, the server is doing nothing else, than copying this file, no nfs anymore, nothing!!
