Help Needed with Installing OS on a PE600SC server

I apologize, I'm a newbie as far as Dell server setup and configuration.
I just received a Dell PowerEdge PE600SC which I purchased as a refurbished lease return.
I'm used to slapping in a Win2K3 CD, booting to it and installing it.
I understand that I need to use the proprietary software called ServerManager, which I've downloaded and used the ISO to create a CD.
I've gone through the OS installation but, after going through the OS installation in ServerManager and booting up, I get a "Bad PBR Signature" message and the system then halts.
Is there something I'm missing?

Thanks much in advance,
Eric

Hello Eric,

Based on the information given, I will make some general suggestions, and you can reply back with your answers/information.  From the error message, it sounds like the partition table on your drive is not being read correctly.  Some of my comments/suggestions may result in completely erasing any information on the hard drives, so please make sure to back up anything important.

Are all the drives loaded into the system blank or being completely reformatted?
Do you have any add-in cards?  (RAID, SCSI, etc?) If so, is one configured to be the boot drive?
Are you installing with the Base 2k3 CD, integrated SP1, R2 or integrated SP2?
Have you booted to the Win2k3 CD, selected recovery console, and done a /fixmbr (and/or fixboot) on the boot drive?  (if this fails for some reason, a Win95 boot floppy will do this also with  fdisk /mbr)

This link should take you to the 600SC support file listing.  Please ensure that you are using the latest files linked from here.

The Dell installation CD from the above link should be the one you are using.  If using this CD results in the same problem, and following the suggestions above make no difference, then try the install just using the Windows 2k3 CD (and doing an F6 install for any required SCSI drivers).

Please let me know how this works for you.

Regards,

David

David, This is a new system, nothing is loaded. It's basically a test server I'm using at home to run my Active Directory on. I formatted the Partitions using the servermanager software from a CD that I burned from an ISO download from the Dell Support site. The drives are not raided, they are standard IDE drives. I'm used to loading generic low-end servers, where you simply boot to the Win2K3 CD so this all caught me off guard. The CD is the base 2k3, I believe. Thanks for the help, Eric
