Problems installing Windows NT 4.0 on a Power Edge 2850

I am having problems installing Windows NT 4.0 on a PE 2850.  Can't use 2000 due to problems with the application that I am installing it on.   I've downloaded the SCSI Drivers, and even upgraded the BIOS, but still not luck.  The installation just halts and reboots after selecting the SCSI drivers  during the selection of the MASS STORAGE devices.  Any suggestions?  Is this server actually compatible to work under Windows NT 4.0?

NT 4.0 is really not supported on this platform. If you are using the onboard PERC4 eDi, the link below may be a suitable driver off the LSI logic website. Unzip the driver to a floppy. Boot the server into the NT4.0 install disk. Once the server POSTs and starts hitting the drive with the install disk start slowly tapping the F6 key, do not wait for the Mass Storage prompt. You should get the prompt to add the raid driver.

Thanks for the response, the server has the default configurations, such as the on-board SCSI LSI 1020/1030, we asked for no RAID, but does it have a built in RAID?  It also has an Adaptec 39160 which drives the PVT100 DAT72 tape drive.  I downloaded the drivers and tried installing by hitting the F6, after hitting S to select additional devices, I selected the driver listed from the diskette.  Then hit Return after selecting the device.  Then it goes through a series of loading drivers, keyboard etc. then it quickly goes to a blue screen of death and it reboots.  Do you know what default HOST BUS adapter does the server come with?  I opened the server and saw a Host bus adapter that the IDE CD-ROM drive, diskette, and hard drive are connected to.  The hard drive then connects to the LSI Logic SCSI card.  I guess by the sounds of it, I am pretty much dead in the water.

Same problem during Windows NT setup : blue screen and then reboots. Try with different RAID controller drivers version from LSI but always same result.

Has anybody succeeds in installing Windows NT on a PowerEdge 2850 ?

ropopov,

We were in a meeting with Dell representatives, and they said that the 2850 is not compatible with Windows NT.  They mentioned that the 2650 works with NT, but since we needed a tape backup device,  and wasting so much time attempting to get the 2850 working, we went with a 1600SC, which is also rackable, the only disadvantage is that is a bit thick to rack.  We were also suggested to change the RAID controllers, but they mentioned that the architecture of the processor could also be a problem.  Good luck

we have just called dell tech support and they have confirmed nt4 will not install on this server which is a major problem as we had intended to perform an in place upgrade from nt4 to windows server 2003
