R430 Can't Detect Disk
Please help! My Dell PowerEdge R430 isn't able to detect any disks. It was able to detect a disk, but after a reboot it suddenly stopped.
I used CTRL+R and it did not detect any physical disks, I've reset the iDRAC multiple times with no success, and powered it off + pushed the power button to train the battery and rebooted, still no success.
I upgraded the firmware on the hardware devices, and now I have a new problem. It's saying:
"A fatal error was detected on a component at bus 0 device 1 function 0."
"A fatal error was detected on a component at bus 1 device 0 function 0."
From what I can tell, Bus 0 device 1 function 0 is: Embedded P2P Bridge 2-1 - Xeon E7 v3/Xeon E5 v3/Core i7 PCI Express Root Port 1
... I don't know what is on bus 1 device 0 function 0.
Please help! I'm not sure what to do from here.
Thank you!

Hello @hyperclock,
It seems to me that there must be a hardware error related to a missconnection/malfunction from the RAID controller or backplane to the motherboard. Is the server still under warranty? If so, a case should be open for extracting the logs and checking the server.
Otherwise, my suggestion is (if you feel like ready for it) open the server and check the connections from motherboard to backplane and PERC controller. Even disconnect and connect again the cables.
Did you mentioned that this happened after a HDD firmware update? Which HDDs are you using? Do you know brand and model?
Regards.

Hi Diego,
Thank you for your reply! Unfortunately it's not under warranty. I opened up the case and reconnected the cables to the backplane and PERC controller. Unfortunately, no luck. The hard drive won't show up in CTRL + R as a physical disk. When I put the hard drive in, a solid green light comes on and I get a message about a Drive connecting, but it doesn't show up in CTRL + R as a physical disk.
The problem started after a reboot using the power button. Before that it was working. After the problem started, I starting updating firmware. Unfortunately that created a new issue during POST:
A fatal error was detected on a component at bus 0 device 1 function 0.
A fatal error was detected on a component at bus 1 device 0 function 0.
Is there a way I can pull logs and determine what's causing the problem?
Thank you!

Hello again @hyperclock,
Ok, so the biggest problem right now is that the server cannot complete the POST. Let's try a Minimum to Post configuration. Minimum to POST configuration is the config that has the minimum components required to complete POST. The PowerEdge R430 to complete POST needs the following components:
System Board
CPU1 with heat sink (minimum for troubleshooting)
Single DIMM configuration with DIMM in socket A1
Control panel with cable (to the power system on)
Power supply unit (and PDB/PIB)
If with this minimal configuration the server is still not able to complete post. Then the problem will be in one of this components (depending on the message you will see in the POST). If the server is able to POST with this minimal configuration then you will have to add components one by one and check the POST until the failure is detected.
Regards.

Hi @DiegoLopez ,
Thank you! I did some troubleshooting and if under "System Setup > Integrated Devices" I:
1) Disable RAID controller AND
2) Disable PCIe Slot 1 and Slot 2 in 'Slot Disablement'
... the error went away for a few reboots. Oddly enough it came back, but I hadn't changed any configuration settings.
I don't think there's anything in PCIe slot 1 or 2. The RAID controller is PERC S130 v4.3.0-0002. I tried updating to v4.3.0-0003 or 0006 and I get the error "The DUP specified is not compatible with the target device." That doesn't really make sense to me; it has the older version.
I also did a "ePSA Pre-Boot System Assessment" and received these errors:
Hard Drive - No Hard Drive detected [Hard Drive]
Error Code: 2000-0141
Validation: 71501
Event log - The log contains failing records [System Management]
Error Code: 2000-0251
Validation: 123841
I'm not sure where that leaves me. Do I need to replace the RAID controller?
Also, the error that shows up during POST is:
A fatal error was detected on a component at bus 0 device 1 function 0.
A fatal error was detected on a component at bus 1 device 0 function 0.
Thank you!

Hi Hyperclock,
If it is showing errors at two locations, it probably isn’t the PERC. It could be the system board or potentially the CPU. Is the system under warranty?

Hi @DELL-Josh Cr ,
No, unfortunately it’s not under warranty (expired in Sept 2018). Is there a way I can pinpoint the component / troubleshoot?
The POST errors only started after I updated the iDRAC and BIOS. Should I roll back to the old versions and see if it goes away?
Really the biggest issue is it’s still not recognizing the hard drive. Any ideas on next steps?

Hello,
yes try to rollback to the old version of idrac and see if it solve.
Is the PERC well recognized? It seems that issue may come from PERC also.
Please let us know.
Thanks
Marco

Hello @DELL-Marco B ,
I replaced the PERC with a Dell HBA330 mini and updated the firmware. When I used 'CTRL+R' to view the hard drives, it displays 'PERC S130 BIOS Configuration Utility'. Is that normal? I couldn't find any other drivers for HBA330 mini. I updated the BIOS and it still showed the PERC S130 Configuration Utility. This is what is says in 'System > Firmware Inventory' :
PERC S130 Controller 4.3.0-0002
Dell HBA330 Mini 13.17.03.00
I'll start working on rolling back and see if it helps.

Hello again @hyperclock,
This is the latest firmware for the H330 Mini on a PowerEdge R430: https://dell.to/3pD8QDG
As you can see, it is the 25.5.8.0001 version.
If during boot you press F11 to access the LCC, can you see on Device Management the PERC H330?
Regards.
