Raid Configured on IDRAC but Windows OS unable to detect new disk

Hi,

First time writing a post here. We recently upgraded our perc card in our PowerEdge R740 from PERC H740P Adapter to PERC H750 Adapter.

A new virtual disk on perc H750 has been created and is live:

On the Windows Server 2019 OS I am unable to view the unallocated disk.

Any suggestion on what I am missing in this scenario will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

AlstonB,

I noticed a couple things, which I want to clarify with you. First is that you have stated you replaced the H740 with an H750, but have noted the H740 after that. Would you confirm if you have updated the Windows driver for the H750?

Also, I noticed in your last message that you stated "external drives", are these drives within the server, or is it an attached inclosure with drives?

Let us know.

AlstonB,

Normally this would occur if the Virtual Disk wasn't initialized after creation.. Another thing I would look into is if the server is up to date on BIOS, iDrac, and the H750 as well.

Let me know what you see afterwards.

Chris,

Thank you for the reply. Updated the BIOS, iDrac and H740 perc but the OS is unable to view the attached disk.

From the system setup, I am able to view the perc and virtual disk

Hi, as Chris stated in his post, please ensure initialized after created VD properly. Please rescan for new disks: You can try rescanning for new disks in the Disk Management console. To do this, right-click on the Disk Management console and select "Rescan Disks." I found two useful article from forums, you can review them.

How to Fix "The Disk Unknown, Not Initialized or Unallocated" (https://dell.to/453fGZc)

Unable to allocate or merge the unallocated disk space - Microsoft Community

  1. Open Disk Management by pressing Windows key + X and selecting Disk Management.
  2. Locate the unallocated disk.
  3. Right-click on the unallocated disk and select Initialize Disk.
  4. Select the disk(s) to initialize and choose either MBR (Master Boot Record) or GPT (GUID Partition Table) partition style.
  5. Click OK.

Hi Erman,

As per the above the following steps have been taken.

  • From iDrac Virtual Disk has been initialised
  • Disk management - Rescan Disks

The OS cannot see any external disks after the rescan disks so unable to choose the disk to initialise.

Thanks,

Hi Chris,

It was the missing windows driver for H750. I had ran updates using iDrac and windows server.

All working now.

Thanks,
Alston.
