Reinstall SBS 2011 without media

We ordered and received a Dell server with SBS preloaded about a year ago. I went through the install routine. Then before I put it into our live environment, something came up and it got set aside. Now almost a year later, I am getting back to it. Problem is that I forgot the password...I know stupid.. it was some variation of my standard passwords...just can't figure out which variation it is...anyway....normally I would just blow it away and reinstall... however we did not get the media with this server. Now I need to reinstall. How do I do this? My assumption is that the software exists somewhere on a virtual disk I can access before OS loads.

A lot of our customers already have media or MSDN accounts and do not need media. We do not send by default. That does not mean we don't send media. If you want media with the server then you can select the option to send media when ordering. The example I provided is just one of many. I'm not sure what sales rep policies are on asking if a customer needs media, but online there is a check box to send media.

Hello cgwayland3

No, you will need the DVD to load the OS.

If you do not have the DVD then you should contact support to request replacement media. Media is only sent by request now. We stopped shipping media with every server because it is a huge waste. When someone orders 100 servers with the same build they do not need 100 media discs. If you need media when placing an order be sure to let your sales rep know, or if ordering online there is an option to ship with media.

Thanks

I STRONGLY disagree with this.  So don't send 100 discs if they order 100 servers, but to not include one with a single server?  That's just wrong.  That's worse than not sending them with client systems.

You could also use any number of tools to reset the password.  MS DaRT comes to mind...

I can understand not sending media for low profit margin workstations but for servers?  IT personnel have enough details to deal with without having to request media, and it is rare the media disks are not needed by small businesses at sometime in the life of a server. Personally I wipe Dell's setup on all machines, as extraneous added software/reg fixes sometimes cause issues, especially on Domain setups, so I need the OS and driver media disks as a given. Agree with Flash, if you are sending out multiple servers, a couple media sets are OK. It should be a default to send the disks out.
