Server 2003 SBE to Plain 'ol Server 2003

3 weeks ago Dell escalated my problem and decided since I could show chapter and verse from Microsoft that said SBE had a limitation that I specifically was told was not a limitation by not only Dell sales but tech support, too, that they would send, overnight, regular 'ol 2003.  Overnight came two weeks later with a license but no software, so I have been given an oh so sincere promise that they will really really send it out overnight.  My question is, do I lose all my settings?  Workstation computers, users, software, etc?  I am presuming there is an upgrade path to regular 'ol.  I think I might want to do this, though I have regularly found that this deos not have a parallel experience in workstations.  It has been my experience on desktops when going from XP Home to Pro that many driver settings are lost.  Local sellers never come pre-loaded with Pro for workstations, so I usually pull them out of the box, and install pro (rather than upgrading) because the system has nothing pre-loaded that I want my users to have anyway.  I want them to have a couple of business specific applications and Office, and not Works, and evaluation versions of Quicken, Photoshop, etc.  It has been my experience that occasional users of office type software, when given the choice of Works or Office, will choose each 50% of the time and when you get a document or spreadsheet, half of them are in Works.  Sorry, just venting.  Upgrade versus full install?  Opinions?

Thanks

What was the limitation that has you thinking about making this move?  You could always backup your Active Directory settings and import them since both versions are on the 2003 platform, or at least I would think you could.

The OS will have to be a clean install.

reinstall and restore .. its a pain .. but thats the bad part about putting all your data on one server

Well you are right that SBS can be the ONLY DC in the forest and I don't know how anyone from Dell missed that one.  Again, you could export and save the AD to a file, export your data, and then fromat and clean install.

If you have formatted partitions on your SBS box this will be a snap otherwise I would recommend investing in a portable USB drive for backups.
