Thunderbolt in R610?

Is it possible to add a PCIe card with Thunderbolt 2 to a R610?  Dell has a card 7HMHP THUNDERBOLT that I am wondering if it could work.

Thanks.

Hi, unfortunately, it does not support this card. I found this thunderbolt board is compatible with some precision series workstations and alienware models. Since the R610 was released, there is no thunderbolt support on this servers.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the response. Though I am curious how it is that a thunderbolt card will not work in a system. Do all thunderbolt cards rely on something that isn't on the card?

Hi @lahatte,

Well, actually, would it work or wouldn't, we can't provide a straight forward answer as based on our part database, the DPN# 7HMHP do not have R610 in it. We can't guarantee that this card would work. If you're looking for answers that if it would work, we may need to wait for user community to provide their experience for this card and PowerEdge.

Ok. Any thoughts on why it might not work? It's a PCIe-2 card, and the R610 has PCIe-2 slots, right? Thanks.

Hi, as Joey mentioned we can't guarantee it. However, sometimes I saw non-certified parts or non-official OS could run on diverse servers in our community. But they can't get official support. You know enterprise products have to support limited and certified parts. Because they are designed to work for the long term. These part's firmware is importing and may cause incompatibility issues.
