USB ports not functional on Poweredge T310
Hello,
I am sure that the problem I am dealing with has already been posted before but I didn't find a post that applied to our specific situation:
We are using a Poweredge T310 server with MS Server 2008R2 Standard as a backup server for a leagacy application that is not compatible with Server 2012 or newer.
We had a power outage in our building recently. Since then keyboard and mouse are not functioning anymore an all USB ports (we actually installed an extra PCIe USB adapter to work around it - with the same result). As we had to change the network settings on our domain server as well, I have no access to the T310 anymore. The OS is booting properly and shows the log-in screen but there is no way for me to access the device from the outside. What I noticed is that the mouse cursor seems to work in the early boot process - as soon as the OS starts to load it becomes unusable again. Means that most probably the USB ports are generally ok - it is a Windows issue that blocks the USB ports. We would greatly appreciate any suggestion how to work out of this conundrum without reinstalling the whole server. J.M.

Hello George Wall,
I'm sorry to see the USB ports stop working when in the OS.
Dell has not validated any PCIe add in USB cards. I can recommend contact the manufacturer to see if it needs any driver/firmware updates.
After the power outage the BIOS may have been changed for some reason.
Can you remove the add in and check the BIOS for USB settings?
F2 BIOS> Integrated Devices > USB ports.
User Accessible USB Ports (Default: All Ports On)
Options are All Ports On, Only Back Ports On, and All Ports Off
The system USB only supports USB 2.0. Are your devices USB 2.0?
Please make sure you BIOS, DRAC and chipset driver are current: https://dell.to/2DX9klL
Try Reinstall USB controllers: https://dell.to/30L63Pu
Please let me know how it goes.

Hello,
Thank you for your reply to my posting. It took a bit longer for me to respond as I am currently not at location and I had to find somebody to perform the suggested steps. Unfortunately we found that we cannot get in to the boot menu. Although we tried several times to invoke the BIOS system setup with F2 and also other function keys like F8 or F10 we were not able to interrupt the boot process into Win Server 2008R2. Needless to say that we tried all imaginable variations of timing pressing the keys - it always ended up the same way. Also we did remove the 3rd party USB card and the USB devices we tried to connect to the different on-board USB ports were keyboard and mouse - hardly USB 3.+ devices.
For checking drivers I need to get into the system first, which is as stated in my original post the basic problem. Thank you anyway for your attempt to help.

Hello George Wall,
Are you able to RDP to the server and log in ok?
You may need to use OS install media to try to repair. You can also use our SupportLive tool to see if you can boot into this standalone environment to test keyboard and mouse and if it works there you may have to repair the OS.

Hi George,
I have a very similar issue, my USB devices get power but won't work therefore I'm unable to login to a HV-Host, which is running perfectly apart from this somewhat debilitating issue.
Could you let me know what PCI card you used? I'm sure most would be fine but I'd rather be sure - I realise this isn't Dell supported but I just need to get into the host to hopefully re-install the USB controller drivers.
Thanks in advance,
Iain
