Windows Server 2003 on a PowerEdge 6300?

Hi there,

Can anyone help a complete newbie install Windows Server 2003 on a PowerEdge 6300 [Service tag: PVF9W].

I can get it to install ie. it boots to the CD and allows me to install the OS but on reboot, I get the message:

Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.
Could not read from the selected boot disk.
Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check the windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information.

I am sure I need several BIOS upgrades etc to get it to work but which?

Hmmmm,

I have already installed: System BIOS, PowerEdge 6300, A13 is that an issue?

PS. Thank you for the super-human quick response!

Hi,

The problem here is the PowerEdge Expandable Raid Controller (PERC) II does not support the INT-13 extensions.

The boot array must be less than 8Gb for Windows Server 2003. The Perc II firmware must be at the latest revision (U84) and use the Win2000 driver for the Perc II. This configuration has not been tested or validated, but I have seen many reports of successful installs on these Dell Community Forums.

Perc II - Firmware, v. U84/C81, A02
File Name: PERCU84.exe

(AMI) PERC II, 2/SC, 2/DC, Driver, Win2000, v. 2.68, A03
Filename: W2k268A.exe (47 KB)

Perc II Management Tools, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0
File Name: PC708I11.exe

Install the ESM Firmware, then the System BIOS on the PowerEdge 6300

ESM Firmware, Multi System, A42
Filename: a42cust.exe (397 KB)
Note: Extract the files to a DOS bootable floppy disk. Boot the server to this floppy disk, and run smflsh.exe.

System BIOS, PowerEdge 6300, A13
FileName: PE6300-BIOSA13.exe [477 KB]     &nbspRelease Date: 6/17/2003

Thanks for using the Dell Community Forums!

Hi,

The only time installing the System BIOS before the ESM Firmware on the PowerEdge 6300 becomes a problem is if the existing System BIOS / ESM Firmware is very old. In your case, this was not an issue.

Thanks
Mark

Good God it worked, everything seemed to already be up-to-date. I just used the W2K268A ((AMI) PERC II Win2K driver) at the [F6] prompt, in Win2K3 install and here I am replying to you on the server  :)

Anyway just out of interest, would I not be better off using a Win2K3 version of the "Perc II Management Tools, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0" (if there is one)?

Thank you VERY MUCH for all your help..!

Hi,

Glad everything worked out right. Unfortuately, there is no updated Management Tools for the Perc II under the Windows Server 2003 Operating System.

Thanks
Mark
