715N: Installing Linux/UNIX
Anyone try scrapping Windows on these units and instead installing Linux or some other variant. The facilities seem to exist for booting from network and one could do a console Linux installation to start up a quality NIS and NFS server. Or even a Samba server.
Personally I run an all-UNIX network, and it is taking up about 25% of my time over the past few months to maintain this silly Windows-based NAS server to keep it integrated with our network with SFU. On top of that, it still struggles with permissions.
Has anyone tried installing Linux on one of these machines? Any recommendations on where to start.

I have heard of some people doing this, though I haven't see it done myself. In theory you can configure a PXE boot server with a kick start image via ftp and have it install.
If you do this though, I wouldn't bother to contact support as they can only assist with a Windows based appliance

The same is true for any NAS appliance. If you install any other OS on the appliance that it didn't come with, Dell support will only be able to support the hardware.
The PV 715, 725 are special cases since they don't ship as a PowerEdge, so troubleshooting the system without Windows Powered installed would be impossible for them.

I wish Dell would take Linux seriously. We're pulling in all kinds of whitebox solutions and HP machines for backends because of lack of support, and it's driving me crazy. I just want one hardware provider, but Dell has seriously been being l a m e here.
Is there any effort internally there to get ship a Linux enabled version of this product? I HATE the Windows OS it ships with (seriously takes up 25% of my time too) because Windows services for Linux (beyond the basics) are basically pathetic.
It's odd that I can't say c r a p p y or s u c k on your board too.

Dell does take Linux seriously. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is a tier 1 operating system, and SuSE Enterprise Linux is a tier 2 operating system moving to tier 1 with SLES 10 is available. We have over 20 RHCE / RHCT and many LPI certified technicians and engineers on our support staff. We also have a dedicated engineering group for Linux. I personally have 3 RHCE's. On 7.0, 8.0 and now RHEL 4. I'm also working on obtaining the RHCA.
Our goal is to certify Linux on server and workstation platforms. The PV 715 is an appliance and was not certified for Linux. However as stated previously, you could PXE boot a Linux install, and get it working. Dell will continue to support the hardware.
