added new drive unassigned
Hi,
We did change a faulty drive (has no data on it) in slot 9 of our MD3000i with a new drive, no when I go to the MD manager the Array says optimal. When I go to the Hardware Component- Physical Disks I can see all the drives says Assigned, but the Drive 9 says unAssigned. we have 2 more new drives in the Device and I want to create a new disk group and new virtual disk from these 2 drives plus drive 9 so when I go to the option create a new disk group there I can see the unassigned disk 9 and the other 2 disks.
quesiton:
Why drive 9 says unassigned? can I go ahead and create my disk group with drive 9 and the other 2 drives?
Thanks

Hello mrshahin,
Yes that is correct. When you create the new disk groups it only will let you do so with disk that are not assigned to another disk group. So since 7,8,&9 are showing as unused then you can use them to make a new disk group.
Please let us know if you have any other questions

Hello mrshahin,
If drives 1-8 are assigned and if you have a hotspare configured and it is part of the disk 1-8 then yes you should be able to use it along with the 2 other drives that you are going to put in as that disk is waiting to be assigned to a virtual disk. Yes you can create a new virtual disk with all three drives and shouldn’t have any issues.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Sam,
Thanks for your update,
the disk 9 was part of a unused / new phsical disk group-virtual disk that was made of disks 7,8 and 9. but the new disk number 9 was faulty so we had to remove the virtual disk and break the phsical disk group then we did replace the disk 9 with a new one. now the array is optimal and every light on the device is green. but the disk 9 says unassigned. now when I try to create a new disk group I can see and choose disks 7,8 and unassigned disk 9. so if I undersnad you correctly I can go ahead and create my new disk group and my virtual disk from disks 7,8 and 9 right?
Thanks

Thanks for your replay,
I did goahead and create a new disk group and new virtual disk with disks 7,8,9 in Raid 5 and everything works as it should.
Thanks for your help on this issue.
