DR4100 email alert not working
I've setup a DR4100 and it is mostly working great.
One thing I cannot get working though is the email alerts.
There is a Recipient address, an Email Relay Host and Admin Contact info (which I assume is the sender address used) configured. The unit itself resides on a IP subnet with no routing to the outside world, so the Email Relay Host is pointed at the IP address of our backup server, also with an interface on the same subnet. On the backup server (Windows 2012R2) there is a portforwarding done (to a SMTP server) with "netsh interface portproxy", a setup I've used in many similar cases.
I can not see any connection attempts (TCPView) on the backup server from the DR4100, nor can I see anything in the SMTP servers logs. The DR4100 itself says "Successfully sent email to all recipients" and the event log says "Test email sent".
Is there any other log on the DR4100 that could show what's really going on, or how should I solve this mail alert problem?

Being unsuccesful in connecting to our SMTP server with the DR4100 through a portforwarding server I set up the same server to act as a NAT router. This gave me half success, I now can see connections being made at our SMTP server.
It appears that for the e-mail alert service to work correctly, the DR4100 configuration must meet the following requirements (not mentioned in the manual)
So, for the other half of the story; the unsuccess one:
The e-mails are getting stuck in our spam filtering since it (rightfully) doesn't recognize the sending address of root@dr4100.ourdomain.com
Is there really no way of altering the sending address? I cannot find it.
If there isn't, please add this as in future updates.

Hello tomhkr,
Here is a link to the users guide, & if you look on page 76-79 it shows how to setup the email alerts. ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_powervault/powervault-dr4100_Administrator%20Guide_en-us.pdf
Also if you look on page 80 it shows you how to setup your Email relay. I would check to make sure that you have your relay setup as it says then try to send a test message & see if it sends the message.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks Sam, I've done it by the book and it still doesn't work.
An e-mail address has been added, as in the manual on page 77.
An e-mail relay host has been added, as in the manual on page 81.
A test message has been sent, DR4100 says "Successfully sent email to all recipients" and a "Test email sent" entry appears in the event log.
But.. I never receive the test email mail. The relay mail server never sees any TCP connections from the DR4100. I can successfully send e-mail from other servers on the same subnet as the DR4100 is on, through the same mail relay server.

Hello tomhkr,
Have you tried to test the email without the relay? I know you state that the DR doesn’t have access to the outside world, but I was wondering if it would work inside your network without the relay to see if we can isolate the issue to see if it is the relay or not. Also is your DR’s IP in the allowed exceptions on your exchange server? If you have tested it without the relay & still not able to get it to work you may need to contact support so that they can gather some logs and possible escalate the issue depending on what the logs state.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Today I updated the DR4100 to software version 3.0.0154.2
This seems to have generated an automated e-mail from the DR4100 that actually got through. Woohoo.
It kind of proves there's nothing wrong with the network setup.
With newly found hope I tried the Send Test Message function. To my disappointment it still doesn't work. The e-mail alert part of the DR4100 is broken, please Dell fic it to the next release.
Dear xxx,
Thank you for purchasing the Dell DR4100.

Hello Tomhkr,
It looks like you have tried alot of different things to get the email relay to work. At this point I would open a ticket with support if you haven’t already so that they can look at it & see if they can get it to work for you.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.
