Event: Expansion enclosure path consistency lost..

Hi,

This is a MD3620i with dual iSCSI controllers and PSUs

We got the error Expansion message in Subject in the MD3620's event viewer a week ago.

When I physically checked the unit I saw that controller 0 had no LED status lights at the Management RJ45 port and below the iSCSI sockets there were several other smaller warning lights (blue at 'i' and amber at battery sign). Two minutes later event viewer shows a "RAID controller module consistency lost" error.

We had a spare controller around so I reset it by unplugging its battery for an hour or so. Then I checked in Powervault Disk Storage Manager that the faulty controller 0 could be safely ejected, which I did.

However upon plugging inn the spare new controller the same error persisted. No status lights at the management RJ45 socket and the same colored warning leds below the iSCSI sockets.

So is this error to an enclosure malfunction and not the iSCSI controller? The unit is out of warranty so I don't expect Dell support will provide information on this.

Thanks a lot for comments on this issue.

best regards Tor

Ikt,

Would you confirm a couple things for me?

First off, what is the firmware version you are currently at?

What do you see in the Recovery Guru?

Let me know and we can go from there.

I also attach a screenshot of the recovery guru first page.  Please note that the reason that we removed the controller was that the mgmt port leds were dark and we had no connection to it.  It was removed when its status was:  Service action:  Removal allowed.

The problem is that another working (but reset) controller was inserted in the same slot and it had exactly the same errors.  That lead me to assume that it was an enclosure problem.....

Thanks for your comments

Hi,

Is the storage enclosure connected/cascade to another storage?

You might be right on enclosure issue. Could you insert back the original controller and check if recovery guru has any changes. I would suggest a need to look at the MD logs to find traces of what has happen. Was there an issue before the controller gave error messages like a disk replacement?

The firmware is quite far from newest, but will need to resolve both controller up and running before a firmware update can run.

Hi again,

Thanks for your comment, We have no cascaded slaves or other units connected.

I will be travelling in the weekend so I'm not in the mood to reinsert the missing controller just before I leave

However please note that when we inserted ANOTHER controller (after having properly reset it) there was no mgmt connection status lights in that controller (exactly same symptom as with the original controller).  This is the reason that I ask if the culprit might be the enclosure itself.

Do you know of any enclosure error condition where the mgmt network status leds are dark when a good network cable is connected?

Hello @ikt,

I have not knowledge of any other enclosure error with dark leds in the mgmt network status with a good cable. Normally the leds should be on if the hardware is working correctly.

But as Joey said, a log analysis should be considered. Is the MD still in warranty?

Regards.

Ikt,

What I suggest you start with is getting a support bundle uploaded to upload . dell. com in order for us to see what is actually going on, really before doing anything else, that way we can determine the best approach going forward. After uploading the support bundle I highly recommend that you update the firmware as soon as possible, as it is really far behind and there were controller issues that were addressed in the newer versions. After that if the error is still present then you will want to upload a second support bundle for review.

Also, after you upload the support bundle, would you private message me the svc tag you used to upload them, so that I can locate and retrieve them?

Thanks.

I understand, but we can still look into it for you. If you upload tonight it will Monday before I will see it. I appreciate your patience.

Hi
Unfortunately the unit is out of warranty, otherwise I wouldn't be here

I'm currently travelling far away from the site but I will try to download the support bundle later tonight.

regards Tor.
