md1000 and 1120 question...

Yes you can connect both the MD1000 & MD1120 together and make it one array.  What you will need to do is to install the Perc6 card for the MD1120 and make sure that it is put into an 8x PCIe slot.  Also I would connect the MD1000 to channel 0 and MD 1120 to channel 1 on the Perc card.  If running on a PERC 5 I would not suggest plugging in the MD1120 as that card is only a 3GB card & the MD1120 has 6GB connections.  Last I would recommend that you upgrade both MD’s to the latest firmware & drivers first before connecting them together just to ensure that there will not be any issues getting them to see each other.

Thanks for the suggestion. Couple followups: 1. Where do I configure these? Is there any GUI interface or is it all done when first booting up? 2. How can I update the firmware of these are there any guides out there?

And finally how can I assure MD1000 is channel 0? and MD1120 is channel 1?

Ok, just looked at our devices. Currently we have one Dell R710 with a Perc 6/e card that just connects to our 1120. The 1120 has two controllers so a cable is going from the IN port on the 1120 into each port of the Perc 6/e. So I am not sure how I would go about connecting the 1000? Can it be connected to the OUT ports on the 1120? Or do I need to order another Perc 6/e card to handle this? Thanks.

You can connect the MD1000 tot eh MD 1120 out port.  We haven’t tested it at dell to confirm that it works efficiently.  What I would recommend is to back all of the drives out of the MD1000 & then plug the MD1000 into the MD1120 and see if it boots to the controller bios and sees both MD’s.  if both MD’s are detected then I would insert the drives in the MD1000 1 at a time to confirm that all the drives show up.   As always it is best to have a valid & tested backup of any data that is on either MD so that you don’t lose any data.

MDSM is for managing an MD3000/3200/3600 series (these could have an MD1000 or MD12xx unit attached).

To manage an MD1000 or MD1120 attached to a PERC6E, you can either go into the PERC bios, or use OMSA.
