MD1000 + Perc5/e + WD1003FBYX
Hello,
I have a MD1000 DAS with dell certified hard disks(500GB) connected on an dell perc5/e controller and i'm thinking of changing the dell hard disks with some WD1003FBYX 1TB disks(non dell). According with the WD compatibility list( http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/cs/2579-771613.pdf) the md1000 is supported. But i cannot find any info for the perc5/e controller.
Has anyone tried the above configuration;;;

On the MD1000 there are only a certain number of drives that are support and guaranteed to work with no issues. Below is the Support matrix and on page 5 is where it lists the hard drives that are compatible with the MD1000.

Hello,
Thanks for your quick reply, but i have already seen this document. Unfortunately is a bit old, and does not contains many of the HD that nowadays are in sale.

You are correct, the reason it has not been updated is because the MD1000 is considered End Of Life. The drives in that list are the only ones I can say for sure will work but as long as they are Enterprise class drives and the specs match up then you shouldn't have any issues.

The PERC5-series never had a drive lock (unlike the PERC H700's earlier firmwares). As the WD1003FBYX is considered a 'raid edition' (and/or Enterprise class) drive, it should work just fine and be fairly reliable (much more so than desktop drives).
However, as you already found, there is no Dell support or guarantee of compatibility with this drive. Dell only will guarantee compatibility with Dell re-branded enterprise drives, but this doesn't mean that non-Dell drives won't work.

As no one has tried this configuration, and dell cannot guarantee the compatibility, i cannot risk buying non-dell disks.
