Hello lukehy,

Can you pull the support log and upload here:  https://upload.dell.com/

Then Private Message me the service tag number so I can retrieve the report.

Hello lukehy,

I apologize. This should be the one you need:

MD3000 / MD3000i : How to collect diagnostic logs

https://dell.to/33ZPPX3

I did some searching and this should be what you need.

the commands need to be run via SMCLI

Here are the commands that need to be run:

smcli -n -p password -c "clear allPhysicalDiskChannels stats;"

smcli -n -p password -c "set physicalDiskChannel [0] status=optimal;"

smcli -n -p password -c "set physicalDiskChannel [1] status=optimal;"

i will generate another support bundle to check again.

on the storageArrayProfile :
Physical Disk interface: SAS
Channel: 2
Port: Expansion
Status: Degraded
Maximum data rate: 3 Gbps
Current data rate: 3 Gbps

CHANNEL PORT STATUS

Hello @lukehy,

What I think Charles is asking for is a full suppor bundle. But yes, after all that should include several files like the majoreventlog.txt

And then you can follow his intructions to upload the log and let him know the PowerVault Service Tag.

Regards.

Hello lukehy,

I have just worked with my Storage Engineer discussing the report.

I know you are aware but I do want to make mention. We know the system is out of warranty and we are here on the forum to provide best effort support.

A possible result of the aged MD3000i controllers is if you turn off unit or unseat controller  from backplane they may fail to come back up.  Nothing to recover, factory recondition would be required.

Good thing you currently have access to all your data.

Now trying to determine issue requires swap controller slots.

See if it is controller (issue follows) or backplane slot (issue stays in slot).

So here we have our  best effort Plan Of Action:

  1. Best option is to procure new storage and move data over
    1. Decommission old storage
  2. IF that is not an option,
    1. Backup all data off of the storage
    2. Procure 1-2 controllers from 3rd party
      1. There is a good chance the controllers will fault beyond recovery during process below
    3. Get maintenance window
    4. Setup serial connection with putty
      1. Turn on logging for connection
      2. Try 115200 rate, but may need 9600
      3. Verify you have access by logging into the session
      4. Either controller is fine
      5. If you have correct serial cable for both controllers set that up
    5. Put hosts in maintenance mode or turn off
    6. Turn off storage stack
      1. Head unit first
      2. Wait 30 seconds to a minute
      3. Turn off expansions
    7. Verify bus mode switch is up
      1. Front lower left hand side below the status LEDs
    8. Swap controllers between slots
      1. Make sure serial connection is seated and output is being saved
    9. Turn on storage expansions
    10. Wait 1 minute
    11. Turn on storage head
    12. Monitor output of the putty session
    13. If the storage comes back up,
      1. Grab new logs for verification from MDSM
    14. If storage does not come back up,
      1. Send output from the serial connection(s)
      2. This may need to be repeated by rebooting the system, moving serial to alt controller to see if they have failed completely
  3. Once issues have been resolved,
    1. Update HDDs to latest
    2. https://dl.dell.com/FOLDER03758748M/1/A25_MD3000x_HDD_Firmware_with_ReadMe.zip

Alternative POA

  • You can try replacing RC0 only to see what happens
    • No guarantee issue is with that controller Issue could be with the backplane or the controller in slot 1 (RC1, bottom)
  • Note that controller can fail on pulling or reseating

Controller pn#X2R63

Backplane pn#JH544

Dell  no longer has any parts for MD3000i, sourcing from Third party would be your option.

Hello @Dell -Charles R

i know the MD3000i is out of warranty , i appreciate the time you took to check the support bundle.

before i generated the support bundle  , we  had that error and when i generated the support bundle the first time i noticed that we couldn't get any information about the Associated Virtual disk on controller 0
so i replaced the controller via  a 3rd party but the error persisted
but now we could move the vdisks across to the "new controller " from controller 1.

so to sum what you put , to try to replace controller in slot 1 as well?
and if not it could be the backplane ?

thank you in advance.
