Hello Nailen,

Thank you for choosing Dell.

Bypassed Physical Disk means that physical disk was not recognized.

Do you have a data on disks?

The following actions could help to resolve an issue:

Perform the following steps to reinsert the physical disk:

a Remove the bypassed physical disk from the expansion enclosure.

b Wait at least 30 seconds.

c Reinsert the physical disk. Its fault indicator light may be light for a short time (one minute or less).

Click the Recheck button to rerun the Recovery Guru.

How to locate Physical Disk you can find here:

https://dell.to/3oy8f7G p.64

I would like also to check logs. Could you, if possible, gather logs from MD3260 and send me them in Private Message?

How to gather logs:

https://dell.to/3owDxMo

Please ask me if you have any questions,

Maria Januszka

Hello Nailen,

Did you try to reinsert physical disk?

I hope logs can help us to isolate an issue.

Hi Maria,

I tried inserting disks with the system turned off. I tried to insert them during operation. I tried discs of different brands. Still the same result.

Best,

Nailen

Hello Nailen,

Thank you for logs, I've checked them and found follow:

Drawer status: Optimal

Position: 0

It means, that there is no issue with drawer 0, but only with unsupported physical disks. As you informed, all disks are not from original configuration. In logs I see also that all 4 disks are not recognized by system:

Physical Disk

Enclosure, Drawer, Slot:          Manufacturer:     Product ID:       Physical Disk Type:

Enclosure 0, Drawer 0, Slot 0     Not Available     Not Available     Unknown

Enclosure 0, Drawer 0, Slot 3     Not Available     Not Available     Unknown

Enclosure 0, Drawer 0, Slot 6     Not Available     Not Available     Unknown

Enclosure 0, Drawer 0, Slot 9     Not Available     Not Available     Unknown

Here I would like to share with you supported physical drive models:

Please ask me if you have any questions

Thanks,

Maria Januszka

Hello Maria,

thank you very much for your reply and for analyzing the logs. I'm glad the device is fine. I searched for them for a long time and transport from abroad was not easy either.

If I understand correctly, I can't use today's 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 TB disks in my device, can I?

I also own a Dell PowerEdge R720, where there are similar limitations and these large drives work normally there. Before I bought the MD3260, I wrote to a user who uses Samsung EXOS 16 and 18 TB in this unit.
Can these restrictions be circumvented? Any newer firmware, ...?
The discs that are on the supported list are very old models and small in size. Hard to find in our country. I need to find an alternative.

Best Regards,

Nailen

Hello Nailen,

I am glad to help you.

Regarding support matrix, you can use 10 TB drives:

PN YF87J Vendor Seagate

PN 07FPR Vendor HGST

Compatibility and firmware of presented in matrix drives has been validated and tested that's why we can guarantee their work.

All drivers and firmware updates for MD3260 you can find here:

https://dell.to/3Hso9sP

We cannot guarantee work of not certified by Dell drives.

Information about supported drives for PowerEdge R720 you can find here:

https://dell.to/3oyD5Nx Maximum capacity depends on installed PERC controller.

Please ask me if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Maria Januszka

Hello Maria,

Of course, I understand that you can only guarantee the functionality of certified disks.
Mostly, but non-certified disks also work on the device at the user's responsibility. So now I was surprised that I tried 5 different discs from different manufacturers and neither was recognized.

So I have another question. Is there any chance that the device will recognize a disc that is not certified?

And the second question. Will the certified disk database help me extend this update?

https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=2dxm8&oscode=w12r2&productcode=powervault-md3260

If so, how can I install it? The manual says: From the array management window select Advanced > Maintenance > Download

Where can I find Advanced?

If they are not certified they are not going to be recognized. Is the upgrade option not under the hardware tab? Which version of MDSM are you using?

Hello, I have MDSM  version 11.20.0G06.0020.

There is no Advanced item in the HW menu and tab.

Try the steps on page 216 https://dell.to/3qIXgez

Hello, I tried the procedure from page 216. I didn't find the exact files for my disks, so I couldn't add anything.

However, I was able to detect the first disk. Status is no longer By-passed, but is Incompatible.

That's still wrong, isn't it? I can't run this drive in the drive anyway, can I?

Hello @Nailen,

Yes, most probably you will need certified compatible disks.

Regards.
