MD3420 - Temperature Sensors

Hi,

Have an issue with temperature sensors that's causing fans to go haywire.

Storage array:  DELL-MD3420
Component reporting problem:     Thermal sensor
  Status:     UNKNOWN
Location:  RAID Enclosure 0 Enclosure 0, Sensor 1
  Component requiring service:  Temperature sensor

Storage array:  DELL-MD3420
Component reporting problem:     Thermal sensor
  Status:     UNKNOWN
Location:  RAID Enclosure 0 Enclosure 0, Sensor 2
  Component requiring service:  Temperature sensor

The SAN handles storage for two ESXI hosts, so it cannot be down for long. Are these sensors PSU related?

Any troubleshooting tips?

Cheers

Hello Connor,

Are there any amber lights on either power supply?

If you can get a support bundle I can take a look for the error.

Hello Connor,

The errors are related to the backplane.

Here I have a Plan Of Action outlined.

  • Get an outage for best options
  • Update MDSM, if not at latest 6.5.0.1 from 01/2018
    • https://dell.to/3TY7pzi
    • Download ISO to management station
    • Extract ISO to management station
    • Uninstall current version from management station
    • Reboot MGMT station
    • Install new version from extracted files
      • If data hosts are Vmware,
        • Do not need to install full version, only management station
    • Once installed,
      • Readd storage with MGMT IPs
  • Update Controllers to the latest
  • Update HDDs to the latest
  • During the outage,
    • Turn on media scans
      • Select a volume in Storage and Copy Services
      • Click Storage on the file bar
      • Click Virtual Disk -> Change -> Media Scan settings
      • Uncheck the Suspend check box
    • Correct host mappings
      • Structure should be setup where each host has both its SAS WWNs
      • Final should look like the below
        • Host Group - VMWARE
          • Host - ESXi01
            • 5d:09:46:60:0d:fe:de:00 - ESXi01a
            • 5d:09:46:60:0d:fe:de:01 - ESXi01b
          • Host - ESXi02
            • 5d:09:46:60:0d:be:d2:00 - ESXi02a
            • 5d:09:46:60:0d:be:d2:01 - ESXi02b
    • Verify that both ESX hosts on both devices are set to RR for MPIO
    • Change ownership of one of the volumes to RC1
      • This is to make full use of storage capabilities
  • If the error continues after the above POA
    • Replace the backplane and control panel
    • Make sure to update the service tag on the new backplane
