MD3620f - Individual Physical Disk - Degraded Path

Recently i've noticed one disk failure on one of the expansions attached to our MD3620f.

When replacing the disk i've noticed two more errors: Individual Physical Disk - Degraded Path and Degraded Physical Disk Channel. In other occasion, when having one disk failure, this error didn't show up. Looking on the user manual and administrator guide i can't find out the reason for this to occur.

On the Individual Physical Disk - Degraded Path error details i got this:

Storage array:  Labtime_Geral

Degraded physical disk paths:   Channel:  2

Related physical disks:  (2, 2)

and if i go to Hardware > Enclosure > Physical Channel and select details on the failed channel, i've got this

DETAILS

DRIVE CHANNEL 2

Port: Out, EMM 1 In, EMM 1 Out, EMM 1 In, EMM 1 Out

Status: Degraded

My system have one MD3620f and two MD1220 attached to it. Oddly enough i have 6 cases of disk failure on the second expansion and none on the other enclosures.

I've noticed that the Controller firmware is outdated (mine is 07.84.56.60 and the latest is 08.20.24.60) and some the disk drives firmware for enclosure 2 are also outdated (mines are A360 and the newest are A440)

Thanks in advance

Hello Brosig,

Can I get you to generate a support bundle so that we can review it?  In most cases what you can do is to reset the physical disk channel and that resolves most issues.  Since you have a couple of MD1220 attached it is best to review the support bundle first.  With your firmware being from July of 2014 that needs to be updated as well as HDD firmware.  I will send you a private message so that you can send me your support bundle.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi DELL-Sam L,

Could you reach the bundle sent by PM?

Thanks

Hello Brosig,

Sorry for the delay.  After looking at the logs I can see that your physical disk channel error is due to reaching the error limit.  I also noticed that you are running firmware that came out in July 2014. What you need to do is to reset the channel stats & that will resolve your degraded physical disk channel error.  You will also need to setup some down time so that you can upgrade your firmware to the latest version which is 08.20.24.60.  Here are the steps to clear and rest the channel stats. You will need to use SMCLI to run the commands.

clear allPhysicalDiskChannels stats;

set physicalDiskChannel [0] status=optimal;

set physicalDiskChannel [1] status=optimal;

set physicalDiskChannel [2] status=optimal;

set physicalDiskChannel [3] status=optimal;

Please let us know if you have any other questions.
