MDSM loses communication to MD3000 when new disk inserted
I've got a MD3000/MD1000 array attached to my Dell PE R805 running Win2008 R2 SP1. I've made sure all firmware and drivers have been updated to the latest version (I'm in the process of setting up a failover cluster with another server). In the process, I'm adding additional drive to expand as well as add a witness disk. The drives I'm trying to add are Seagate ST2000nm0001 (Constellation ES).
Everytime I slide one it, the array light goes orange and loses contact with MDSM. If I pull the drive out, the array will right itself and reconnect with MDSM after a minute or so.
MDSM suggests that 1) the array is turned off, 2) the network is unplugged, or 3) there are too many TCP/IP connections (?!).
Any thoughts?

The drive has to have a Dell firmware on it to be compatible. There is no (cost effective) way to take a generic drive and put the Dell firmware on the drive, so your only choice is to buy the drives from Dell or a reseller (e.g. via Ebay).

The drives that you are trying to add to your MD are not part of the support matrix for the MD3000 or MD1000. If you put a non dell certified drive into your MD then it will not use the drives & can cause errors to happen. Here is a link to the support matrix for your MD3000 & MD1000.

Is that the case even with upgraded firmware? I ask that because I did find the latest HDD Firmware updates (A15) for the MD3000/MD3000i and they clearly list the Seagate model ST2000NM0001 as a drive that has an embedded update.

The User manual you referenced was produced in 2011 and my assumption (which I may be wrong - but I hope not) is that newer drives are being added to the support matrix as they become commercially available.
What I am going to try now is to put one of the ST2000NM0001 drives into another workstation I have and update the firmware there - then see it the MD3000 will accept it.

It appears that there is only one version of firmware for these drives so far - that which they were distributed with. Seagate doesn't offer an update and Dell has the following text in their firmware upgrade document...

I still find it baffling that it's listed in here if it is, in fact, not supported.
