Multiple Disk Groups Refer to Foreign Physical Disk
When trying to replace a failed hard drive in an MD3000 with a hard drive from a surplus MD3000 we get the following message "Multiple Disk Groups Refer to Foreign Physical Disk". I'm pretty sure that this means the replacement drive thinks it should be in the surplus MD3000 and needs to be set somehow to allow it to be used by the working MD3000. Ho do I get the foreign disk to work as a replacement drive in the working MD3000?

Hello PeoplesB,
The reason that you are getting the error is that since you pulled the drive from your surplus MD it most likely still has some data on the drive that goes to the surplus MD & it is looking for that array to match the data before it brings it online. Since you stated that you tried using SMCLI to initialize the disk & received the error that it can’t initialize the disk then what you can do is if you happen to have an older dell server like a PE2900 or 2950 that has an empty slot on it then you can insert the drive into there and format the drive then once it has completed then you can put it back into the MD and it should been seen then & online. If you don’t have an old PE2900 server then you can also add that drive into any server that has a PERC card & do an initialize on the drive from the PERC bios & then once the initialize finishes then insert the drive into the MD & it should be online.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I tried Start Physicaldisk initialize but got the following error:
An error occurred initializing physical disk[0, 4] at line 1.
Error 410 - A physical disk operation cannot be performed because the state of the physical disk is inappropriate for the requested operation.
The command at line 1 that caused the error is:
start physicaldisk [0,4] initialize;
Script execution halted due to error.
Also of note when I do show physical disk I get the following:
Physical Disk at Enclosure 0, Slot 4
Status: Offline
Mode: Incompatible
Raw capacity: 931.513 GB
Usable capacity: 931.013 GB
World-wide identifier: 50:00:c5:00:10:03:f8:a7:00:00:00:00:00:00:00:00
