The PERC6E is only for the MD1000 or MD1120.

To connect to an MD3000, you have to use a SAS5E card (non-raid, as the MD3000 has the raid controllers in it).

thanks for info, could be reason but another member of staff here has said theyve found people using perc cards on md3000, and its what server source suggested.

I suggest with your co-workers as I've never seen a PERC work with an MD3000 and I see this SAN being implemented a couple of times a month.

The MD1000 and MD3000 share the exact same chassis, the MD3000 just has raid controllers (that won't talk to a PERC5/PERC6) where the MD1000 has management modules (that require a PERC (or an MD3000/MD3000i) to handle the raid part).

If you haven't yet, connect the SAS5E card to the 2 raid controllers on the MD3000 and reboot. Then try a discovery.

Additionally, are the MD3000 management ports on the same subnet as your NIC? Unless you have a DHCP server, their default IPs are 192.168.128.101 and 192.168.128.102. So, your management station needs to be on that subnet to be able to manage the array. You can also do what Dev Mgr suggested to manage the arrays in-band

I was hoping to revisit this issue as these posts are a few years old.  Is there a solution for connecting the MD3000 to the PERC 6E card or should I call my Dell Sales Associate and direct him to this forum post?

There is no solution; it won't work. You have to have a SAS-controller (non-raid) to connect to the raid controller in the MD3000; specifically a SAS5E (only supported card by Dell).

Copy that!  I as told by a Dell storage support guy that I should use the SAS6E card.  Is this a suitable sub for the SAS5E or should I just get the 5E?  By the way, thanks for the info!

It's not on the Dell support matrix for the MD3000, but it does have a good change of working (though wouldn't be supported).

One note though; the external connection is different from the SAS5E, so you'll need a different cable, which Dell won't offer as the combination of a SAS6E and an MD3000 isn't supported.

The MD3000 and SAS5E have an SFF-8470 connector, but the SAS6E has an SFF-8088 connector.

For pictures so you can see the difference, check this wikipedia article; en.wikipedia.org/.../Serial_attached_SCSI.
