PowerVault MD1200 VERY slow to Initialize
Hello,
I have several MD1200s, but this last batch of 2 have given me an issue I've never seen before.
These are refurb models so when I get them I always do a full initialization (12, 4TB drives.) This generally takes about 8 to 10 hours. I start it before I leave for work and it's done when I come back in the morning.
However, this last batch of 2 (also 12, 4TB drives) are taking 5 to 6 days. The one I started last night at 5:00PM is at 16% now as of 7:30AM this morning.
I've updated the firmware to the most current version, and I'm using the same RAID controller, cables, and system on this one that seems so slow as I did on one of the other ones I have that initialized normally.
There doesn't seem to be any errors and it's behaving correctly as far as I can tell, the only difference other than time I've noticed is the little spinning pipe "|" next to the progress percent doesn't spin on the slow Arrays and it does on the one that initialize faster.
I'm really at a loss here, any idea on why these would initialize so slow?
Thanks
Eric

Just a quick correction, disregard the spinning pipe "|" comment, I was wrong it doesn't look like it spins on either.

As luck would have it I had a spare Array that I could do a comparison with. I swapped all drives between the arrays and the problem definitely followed the drives.
Both sets are 7.2k RPM drives, but one set is Seagate and the other is Dell. The Dell drives are the ones that initialize slowly.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Initialization should take a while, but specific times I can't really comment on. With you having already updated firmware, the only other thing I could suggest would be a log review from the storage controller. It may provide a bit of additional detail as to what is happening.
