problem with MD3200i and VMWare ESXi 4.0

I'm getting an error when I attempt to add a LUN from a MD3200i to my VMWare ESXi 4.0 host which is on a PowerVault R900, it says "error during the configuration: Failed to update disk partition information.

Here's what I'm doing.  In vSphere Client, I select the host then go to Configuration tab then select Storage then click Add Storage.  I've configured each LUN on the MD3200i to be 1.2tb.  I select one of the LUNs and when I get to the point where I can choose the Maximum File Size, I leave it to the default which is 256gb with 1mb Block Size.  I click Finish then see the "error during the configuration: Failed to update disk partition information" error.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to troubleshoot this error or have any ideas on how to resolve it?

Hello BBowman,

Here is a link to the support matrix and if you look on page 19 your current version of ESXi 4.0 is not supported but ESXi4.1 is.  ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/Common/powervault-md3200_user%27s%20guide2_en-us.pdf

Also with creating a 1.2TB volume you know that you will only be able to create a vhd up 256.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you for your reply Sam.  I will upgrade to 4.1 and will report whether or not this has cleared up my error.

One possible cause for this error is that the server is connecting only to 1 of the 2 controllers on the MD3200i, and the virtual disk could be 'owned' by the other controller at this time. This is why you want to make sure that every server connects with at least 1 network connection to both controllers.
