PV-110-LTO memory errors
I have 2 poweredge 4600 servers, both with the 110-lto (internal) tape drives in them. From the time we first installed them, we've been intermitantly getting error messages from Arcserve "e6615 The memory in the tape cartridge [BACKUP] with serial number {serialnumber} has failed, which reduces performance. Do not use the cartridge for further backups". CA support has no record of this error message in their database. This error occurs on multiple tapes, and is a frequent occurance, although it doesn't happen all the time. I have a hard time believing that I have 2 bad tape drives...or many, many bad LTO tapes. I ran the dell diagnostics on the servers per dell support's recommendation, and it came up with 0 errors. I suspect that the error is erroneous, however, it is a problem as we do several remote backups from a single server, and when the error occurs, a "tape error" state occurs on the drive, and subsequent backup jobs fail, until you eject the tape, and re-insert it.
a google search for this error came up with a couple of documents that state that a firmware update may be necessary, but I can find no firmware download on Dell's site for the PV-110-LTO.
I thought perhaps our backup software was at fault (arcserve 7 for Netware), and that an upgrade might change things. We upgraded to Arcserve 9 for Netware, and we're still getting the error. NOS is Netware 6.0, spk3. Arcserve's tape engine says that the "revision" is E21V.

I do not think it is bad memory. I've ordered replacement tapes for replacement tapes for replacement tapes, and continue to have the same problem. It is either problem with the drives, or there are major manufacturing problems with the tapes.

Hi
Since changing the tapes to FUJIFILM DDS (DG4-150) - the error has gone away and the backups are working fine.
For some reason all the other makes I tried just didn't seem to want to work.
Don't know if this helps anyone.
Milby.

This is an error with the TAPE. LTO Cartridges have memory to improve media management and reliability in them and the memory fails occationally. Contact the vendor you bought the tapes from and have them replace them.
There is no need to update your firmware on the drive. It's reporting the error properly.

With regards to the restore problem not being able to restore a backup under Veritas BackupExec 9, I did see a new hotfix on their site regarding this. Goto www.veritas.com for more details.
I am experencing the Event ID: 9 under Windows 2000 and Backupexec 8.6
The device, \Device\Scsi\adpu160m2, did not respond within the timeout period.
Anyone worked it out? The thread starts to go off on a tangent.

Ok, yes I did have a different problem before, but now I have the memory error message.
Almost each day I get that message in the Backup Exec (8.5) Alerts log that the memory in the tape has failed and not to use it again. I got the LTO tape backup drive and tapes from Dell for our PE2500. The red error light flashes on the tape drive and when I put another tape in it stops flashing.
However, in the BackupExec job monitor log it always completes at 100% success rate. I have sucessfully tried a restore several times. However, I am not convinced it is working properly.
I have contacted Dell about this multiple times and have not had a single tape replaced. I imagine if I complain long enough and loud enough they will comply and replace the tapes as they exhibit this unfortunate behavior.
I keep wondering if some kind of upgrade would help, like to Server 2003 or firmware or something!

I would recommend an upgrade to 9.1Sp1. I use 8.6 on one server and 9.1sp1 on another.
The latest version is much better.
