RAID controller reboot and path not found on MD3220i

We have 2 MD3220i SAN's running in our datacenter. One of them is 6 years old and another about 4. Both are running 08.20.05.60 since 2015 with esxi 5.5 without any issues. Once in a while we will see error that virtual disk is not on preferred path, but it wont affect data access. Recently we have noticed that in the newer SAN, the RAID controller reboots without any warning and when that happens we get a message saying the virtual disk is not on preferred path, however the esxi 5.5 servers cannot access the data in the virtual disk. Multi pathing is enabled and there has been no change in the wiring and 2 switches. Also we are able to ping all 8 ports on the SAN from the server

Should we upgrade to the latest firmware on Dell website?

Hello Vijay Ayar,

I would upgrade to the latest version of firmware as it is supported for ESXi 5.5.  The current version of firmware that you are running was removed & we advised customers to move to 08.20.09.60 if they were running 08.20.05.60.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello Vijay Ayar,

Your issue should be resolved with upgrading the firmware on your MD3220i.You can try to do the host access setup again and that should make it so that your virtual disk should show back on your host.  The steps to do that are on page 55 of the administrator guide. https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/common/md32xx_md36xx_administrator%20guide_en%20us.pdf

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello Vijay Ayar,

Here are the links to the Controller firmware, HDD firmware, & Resource DVD.  Here are also the instructions for doing the firmware as well.

Controller firmware

https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=4CP5X&osCode=W12R2&productCode=powervault-md3200i

HDD Firmware

https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=JPHY4&osCode=W12R2&productCode=powervault-md3200i

Resource DVD

https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=R9G1X&osCode=W12R2&productCode=powervault-md3200i

Firmware Install steps

  1. Gather support bundle in MDSM
  2. WARNING: If you have a single controller PowerVault MD3200/MD3600 series storage array you must stop all I/O operations before starting the firmware upgrade.
  3. Extract the firmware to folders and remember location.
  4. Burn or mount the ISO for the resource cd.
  5. Uninstall the MDSM from hosts (reboot required)
  6. Install MDSM from resource DVD (reboot required)
  7. Clear the Major Event Log.
  8. Update to 07.75.28.60 if not already there, then update to latest firmware.
    • If you receive an error while checking the SPM database, ensure that you have an out of band management connection to both RAID controllers.
  9. Verify connection and data.
  10. Update the hard drive firmware.
  11. Reboot stack and verify all is optimal.
    1. Power down the server(s)
    2. Power down the MD32x0(i)
    3. Power down any attached storage (MD12xx)
    4. Leave the power off for 2-3 minutes

Please allow for at least 60-85 minutes for the updates.  Time may vary depending on how long each reboot takes.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello Sam,

I hope you are well. As per your instructions i have transferred raid controller firmware on 08.20.24.60. on both raid controller of Dell MD 3220i SAN. and now its showing me the version (08.20.24.60.) on raid control firmware. So my question is that do i have to reboot the whole SAN for apply this firmware . Or this will work fine.

Thanks,

Vijay

Hello Vijay,

It is best to reboot your MD3220i after the firmware upgrade has completed as stated in step 11.  You can run the system without rebooting, however you may get some issues that will only be cleared with rebooting your MD3220i stack.
