Replacing disk - Status: incompatible - Unable to upgrade firmware

Hi

Got a MD3200i. A disk reported as failed so I purchased an identical disk (same Product ID ST3600057SS).
However the new disk reports now
Status Incompatible
Cause: Unsupported
Mode: Incompatible

I suspect this might be because of the disk firmware: 000B. Newest firmware is ES68.

When trying to upgrade firmware I get this message:

ERROR DATA

Command sent to RAID controller module in slot: 0
Return code: Error 249 - The physical disk firmware download operation failed because one or more of the physical disks you selected has a Bypassed or Offline status and is inaccessible. Please make sure the physical disks you selected do not have a status of Bypassed or Offline, and then retry the operation.

Operation when error occurred: PROC_startDriveFirmwareDownload

How to determine if old firmware is really the cause of incompatibility status?

And if so, how to 'activate it' so that it gets a status that allows firmware upgrade?

Dell's MD3k series SANs only accept Dell Certified Enterprise Drives of the specific models in the support matrix.

So, if your drive is the same model, but it doesn't have on the sticker the "Enterprise Class - Certified by Dell" on it, it won't work. There is no way to bypass this.

You can look on Ebay or so for appropriate drives if Dell won't sell one or charges too much. Here is an example.

Thanks for quick reply. No references to Dell certified on the new disk on the left hand side in attached photo . (And firmware version is totally different series.)

Purchased it through a Dell partner. So I hope they will replace it with a certified one.

The drive would work in a Dell server attached to a PERC (though it may report to be an non-certified drive), which could be why the partner sold that specific drive.

It's just the MD3k-series that will not accept anything other than a Dell branded drive. Note that this practice is not unique to Dell; a lot of the higher end SAN vendors lock their systems to only support their model drives.
