SERV DELL R220 - iSCSI boot

Hello,

i'm going to buy:

SERV DELL R220,E3-1220v3 (3.1GHz),8GB UDIMM, 2x1TB 2.5 7.2K 6Gbps SATA HD, iDRAC7 Express, PERC H310, 3YProSupport.

Is it possible to boot MS Win 2012 from NAS through iSCSI? Is it supported by BIOS an built in network adapteror should I need to buy anything yet (different network host adapter forex.)?

Could I move 2x1TB hardrives to NAS for the purpose?

Outstanding! I did a little research and it would appear you are correct. This one does support Boot from SAN. SO, I put together a document with some instructions. I hope you find them helpful. Thanks for the heads up!

Hi Daniel,

thanks for the reply.

I'm going to attach Synology RS214 NAS. I would like to use it for other purposes as well.

What type of HBA would you recommend, if it is necessary for the scenario?

Thank you once more.

Hello, fcela.

To answer your first question, it is possible, yes. It is not necessarily supported by BIOS on the built in network adapter, as it requires drivers provided by the OS.

You would need to purchase a hardware iSCSI Host  Bus Adapter (HBA) in order to setup a 'Boot from SAN' configuration.

Depending on what type of Storage you'll be attaching to, there is pleanty documentation for each.

You can definitely move your 1TB drives, and use them for this purpose, yes.

What kind of storage are you attaching to? Perhaps I could search for some documentation for you.

I'm happy to help. Let me know.

No worries.  Honestly, Dell offers a hand full of different models which I'm sure would work fine. From BroadComm to QLogic to Intel. I would go through the specs of the Synology documentation, and see if there is a recommended type, but I doubt you'll have trouble with any of the brands offered.

Hi,

R U sure the embeded NIC Broadcom 5720 dual - port 1Gb LOM does not support iSCSI boot from NAS?

It is the one you can obtain as optional NIC for the server as well (accessories.ap.dell.com/.../category.aspx;l=en&s=dhs&cs=audhs1&category_id=7398&~ck=anav&nf=69261~0~450751&navla=69261~0~450751)

Thanks.
