TL2000 - Media Attention / Error - 0x38
Hi,
I've got notified about our TL2000 from our Bacula backup while failing the weekly tape backup. The web gui just tell me:
Status: Media Attention
Drive 1 Status: Error
from Monitor Library -> Inventory

At startup we receiving following alert flags (per e-mail):
Event Code: 0x84 - tape alert Drive number: 0x01, 1 Tape Alert Flag: 0x03, 3
Event Code: 0x84 - tape alert Drive number: 0x01, 1 Tape Alert Flag: 0x04, 4
Event Code: 0x84 - tape alert Drive number: 0x01, 1 Tape Alert Flag: 0x21, 33
Event Code: 0x84 - tape alert Drive number: 0x01, 1 Tape Alert Flag: 0x27, 39
Event Code: 0x84 - tape alert Drive number: 0x01, 1 Tape Alert Flag: 0x38, 56
The "action required" advice for the last alert flag is to unload the cartridge, cycle drive power and unload again.
As long as here is no element / slot / tape number, I've unloaded all slots and restarted the TL2000. Without any tapes inside, we still get the same error messages.
I've also started the diagnostics (slot to slot and system test) multiple times. All of them "passed".

I've charged and ejected the cleaning tape and some other tapes via the I/O station successfully. The "move" function works as expected.
I've taken a look inside as the magazine was out, I didn't see any tapes stuck or someting else. Or do I have to open the case completely?

Cleaning tape stuck in the drive or expired?
are you able to eject a tape from the drive?

Hello sfromm,
Based on the errors that are listed there is an issue with the picker grabbing the media out of the drive. You are also getting drive ejecting issue as well, which is due to the picker not getting the media out within the timeout period. What I would is to remove all media except 3 tapes and run the random moves test about 20 cycles. What is the current version of firmware that you are running on your TL2000?

Hi Sam,
I've started a 25 cycle random move test with just three tapes inside which passed successfully.
The currently Installed Library Firmware is "D.70". I'm going to start an upgrade to F.10 and do the tests again:
E.30 -> same alert messages. Slot to slot tests passed successfully.
E.70 -> same alert messages. Slot to slot tests passed successfully.
F.10 -> same alert messages. Slot to slot tests passedsuccessfully.. But Drive 1 Status changed from "Error" to "Idle"! The Media attention still exists.
Our installed Drive Firmware: (LTO4 FH SAS) -> Revision C7QH
This seems to be the latest firmware revision for LTO4 Drives.
The drive inventory still shows:

What exactly is "Drive 1" here? I've got a cleaning tape called "CLNU00L1" definitely outside the tape. Or could it be that there is really something stuck inside the reader (and outside the magazine)? I don't know if we have two cleaning tapes (with the same label) :/
Before I've just tested "slot to slot" moves. When I try to move "Drive 1" to a slot or to the I/O Station, I've got the following error message:
HE: drive unload timeout - Code: F5

The output from bacula / mtx-changer while trying to re-insert a (from bacula) deleted tape
I've got the same output from slot 22, which was tested, too.

Hello sfromm,
Drive 1 is the tape drive in your TL2000. I would remove the tape drive from the rear of the system and ensure that there is not a tape in the drive. Also, while the drive is out of the system you can look at the picker & rotate it to ensure that there is no media in it as well. If you don’t have any media in the drive or in the picker then we will need to get a drive dump from your TL2000. If you login to the web utility for your TL2000, & go to the Service Library menu, then select Save Drive Dump. You will have an option of where to save the log on your local machine. I will send you a private message so that you can send me the log.

Hi Sam,
you and tapelibraryfixer were right, there is a stuck tape in the tape drive at the rear of the system. And it's indeed a cleaning tape with the same label I have outside the tape.
It was a bit tricky to remove the tape, because the tape itself (not the cartridge) had been ripped.
After inserting the tape drive again the status is now Ready and Idle.
But with inserting and ejecting a tape into the the tape drive, we are getting another error message now:
Is there any other chance for us to get the tape drive working again or do we have to give up here?

There may be tape still on the spool so the drive isnt coming ready properly.
the drive may need repairing, once a drive snaps a tape theres a good chance it will happen again. its sensors may just be dirty though.

Hello Sven,
With the new error that you are getting in most cases we would replace the drive. When media breaks in the tape drive you have to make sure that you get all parts of the media out. I have seen in most issues when getting these errors that the drive will have issues and not work correctly & need a replacement.
