Upgrade instructions for MD3220i

Hello,

We have a setup with  1 MD3220i, 2X R815 hosts running esxi 4.1U3 free and 2 X 5548 switches.

We just purchased another MD3220i (not installed yet) and are planning to upgrade hosts to esxi 5.1 free. I have been told that the older firmware in MD3220i has problems with esxi5.5. Can you suggest what is the best upgrade path for our system with this configuration. I don't know what the new MD came with since I have not yet powered it on.

Hello nid15,

Since you will running ESXI 5.1 & 5.5 I would recommend that you upgrade to the latest version of firmware for your MD3220i. Here is the link to the firmware for the MD3220i & the hard drives as well as the link to the newer version of the Resource cd that has the new version of MDSM.

MD3220i firmware:

http://ftp.us.dell.com/FOLDER00636678M/1/MD3200_MD3220_Firmware_Package_07_80_62_60.zip

HDD Firmware:

http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=0P3CX&fileId=3387659009&osCode=WS8R2&productCode=powervault-md3220i&languageCode=EN&categoryId=EH

Resource CD:

http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=JTPC2&fileId=3423584463&osCode=WS8R2&productCode=powervault-md3220i&languageCode=EN&categoryId=CD

Here are the steps that is needed to upgrade your firmware on any MD3xxx system.

If your current firmware is not 7.75.28.60 A06 8/3/11 – you MUST step to 7.75.28.60 before going to 07.80.62.60. This firmware is included with the 07.80.62.60 download.

  1. Gather support bundle in MDSM
  2. WARNING: If you have a single controller PowerVault MD3200/MD3600 series storage array you must stop all I/O operations before starting the firmware upgrade.
  3. Extract the firmware to folders and remember location.
  4. Burn or mount the ISO for the resource cd.
  5. Uninstall the MDSM from hosts (reboot required)
  6. Install MDSM from resource DVD (reboot required)
  7. Clear the Major Event Log.
  8. Update to 07.75.28.60 if not already there, then update to latest firmware.
  • If you receive an error while checking the SPM database, ensure that you have an out of band management connection to both RAID controllers.
  1. Verify connection and data.

10. Update the hard drive firmware.

11. Reboot stack and verify all is optimal.

  1. Power down the server(s)
  2. Power down the MD32x0(i)
  3. Power down any attached storage (MD12xx)
  4. Leave the power off for 2-3 minutes

Please allow for at least 60-85 minutes for the updates.  Time may vary depending on how long each reboot takes.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I could not find a way to restart the MD from MDSM software. Fortunately our PDU has network port and we restarted using that. It would be nice to have a restart command on MDSM
