Upgrade server for MD100
Greetings,
I'm seeking advice on the best way to upgrade/replace a PowerEdge 2950 that hosts our two MD1000 arrays. There's nothing wrong with the system, it's simply getting old and I'd like to proactively upgrade the environment. This PE is running Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 and uses a PERC 5E card to connect the MD1000's.
The main objective is to preserve the data on the existing arrays. There's practically nothing on the host machine. What is the best approach to accomplish this?
I've got my eye on a NX3000 with a PERC 6E board in it. Is this a reasonably simple task of connecting the MD1000's to the new server/RAID board? Would the new PERC 6E even recognize the existing arrays on the two MD1000s?
Thanks in advance..

You can connect an MD1000 that came off of a PERC5E to a PERC6E without losing any configuration or data (I'd still recommend to have backups, just in case).
One nice thing about the PERC6E is that you could pick up 2 extra SAS cables and plug the first MD1000 with 2 cables into the PERC6E and daisy chain the second MD1000 off of the first MD1000. This gives you 2 paths to each MD1000 for more bandwidth and failover.
This does require fairly modern PERC6E firmware and drivers, but unless the NX3000 you get for whatever reason has really old drivers and firmware, you can pretty much assume that the redundant-connection option is supported.
