There isn't a upgrade path.  Windows Server 2003 comes OEM only from new PowerVault NAS boxes.

That's unfortunate.  Anyone know of a third-party product that behaves like VSS from Windows 2003?  Is it possible to have another Windows 2003 server perform VSS on my 725?

Question -- Is there an upgrade path from Windows Powered OS to WIndows Storage Server 2003 on a PV755N ?

Has anyone got an answer to this yet or better still a part number for the upgrade kit as I have two new Power vault 775N that that have been waiting for this upgrade before I go live with them for two months now. It appears Dell is ship new 775N with MS Storage Works but not sell you the upgrade pack why

I think there is an upgrade kit, but would have to call Dell, but not sure it is free or not.

After being given countless false promises by Dell reps that a MS Storage works upgrade will be available for the PowerVault 775N despite asking for it to be delivered with 2003 in the first place I can’t wait any longer. As the box is effectively a Power Edge 2650 what is to stop me installing Windows 2003 Enterprise server on the box?

I suspect nothing - Please try it and let us know if it works :)

I think the main drawback to installing Windows 2003 Enterprise, is that you now would have to worry about cal's.  The "easy migration path to Windows Storage Server 2003" would be preferable in my case.

My problem is that I can't get Dell to give it to me, tell me where I can get it or acknowledge that it exists.  Contacting my salesrep has not been helpful.

If you ordered 725 PowerVault today you could spec to have Windows 2003 Storage Server from the factory

I have been trying to get a definate answer from dell about that, but our rep didn't seem so sure.  I don't see why not?  the other powervaults come with it.

And, there is no option to select for "w2003 server" when customizing the PV.  It was kinda hard to track down the fact that it came with W2000 Advanced Server, but I eventually found that info.

On the Dell site I did not see the availability for the 725, only availability on the 770 and the 775.  For some reason it also had to have the 533 fsb option selected not the 400 fsb to get it.  A definitive answer/explanation would be nice.

We opted to get the Installation Services for the PowerVault as we are reconfiguring/upgrading a PE4400 from 144GB/WNT Server to 1168GB/W2003 Server and we will need the extra time to work out the kinks in the PE4400.

I assume that if you request that Dell sets up the machine, they would have to call you about it right?  I mean, how would they know which kind of raid I want to have on there, etc?  So I am hoping that this communication with the Dell Techs might lead us to a factory ready W2003 Server PowerVault.

Does anyone know what actually gets set up when you select Installation Services from the customization options?  Does Dell communicate with the buyer on how the machine should be set up?
