5820 bios update 2.0.2 Jan 20 stuck at 0%

I had to disable the dell command update. It keeps trying to install the critical 5820 bios update Version 2.0.2  dated 20 Jan 2020.

The bios installer reboots and then gets stuck at 0%. I have reset the bios to factory settings. Bit locker is not on.

This has happened about six times, 4 via the dell command update and twice trying to manually update the bios from the installer on the support page for the service tag. The last time it failed I went home at 5 PM and it was still at 0 % at 8 AM. I have previously updated the bios on this workstation 3 or 4 times with no problems. I have made no hardware changes.  Fortunately, I can hit the power button and restart and get back into windows.

Has anyone else experiences this? Any solutions?

Thanks,

Mark

@GXAlan

When BIOS settings are reset to default, or switched back from legacy to UEFI, bootable devices must be reidentified on the next boot.  Perhaps some of the external drives attached to your workstation have EFI partitions that confused your workstation.  The easiest fix would be booting with all external drives disconnected.

It sounds crazy, but it works with a lower resolution monitor (1680x1050). It didn't work with my UHD monitor. Dell told me that. For the repaired BIOS, the BIOS 2.2 should already be installed on the device.

FYI - even after getting a new motherboard with 2.0.2 preinstalled, updating to 2.2.0 still gets stuck at 0% Flash Progress. Two of four of our employees with the 5820 were able to update from 2.0.1 to 2.2.0 after many tries, and they happen to not be using 4K monitors, so I think there is weight to that being an issue.

FYI 2: I got a motherboard replaced in march because I couldnt update the Jan 20 2.0.2 bios. Now the new 2.2.0 got stuck at 0% too. Tried the solution with a low resolution monitor, could update the bios from flash drive with no problem at all!

My setup: Dell Precision 5820 Tower XCTO Base, 2 x DELL Monitor U2718Q --> Bios updates always stuck at 0%

My workmate's setup: Dell Precision 5820 Tower XCTO Base, 2x DELL Monitor U2515H --> Bios updates without any problem so far, and its the exact same 5820, apart from the monitors.

I think Dell has to step up a little here, this problem is known since jan 2020, and I gess there are alot of 4k Monitors out there. Although it seems to be a problem with a not to complicated solution (and far cheaper and less disruptive as to have a dell tech replace hardware!), changing monitors for bios updates is still annoying. Would be interesting if there are people with 5820 Tower's and 4k with no problem updating bios...

Best regards

Connecting to a low resolution monitor is really worked! Big thanks!

@IH_5820

Asking a Dell technician about replacing the motherboard is the last thing I would do.  Not only because it is expensive for Dell, that wastes a motherboard replacing another one that is possibly fine, but also because there is a risk of damaging other components on the computer.

In most cases there is a simple, even if sometimes no obvious at all, fix like the one described on this thread, or it is just a matter of waiting for the next firmware release.

I am very happy to know my Precision Tower 3420 has two UltraSharp U2414H monitors!

Jep, asking a Dell tech to replace the motherboard is not something you really want, because it may cause damage and its a lot of effort for everyone involved, but back then it sounded like the last resort. We had some issues with my T5820, witch didn't occur on the exact same workstation that my workmate had. Dell gave me this possibility, so I went for it, after no other attempts for solving the problem worked.

By the way, we have some other T5810 with 4k Monitor in our Company, and they so far did not have any issues updating the bios. As far as I know, the bios-update-4k problem is specific to the T5820 workstation.

We just got some new 4k Monitors (U2720Q) for an older T3610, so we have another combination of workstation-monitor to check how they behave in case of bios-update...we will keep you informed.

I appreciate your Inputs, cheers

Same issue here when connected to a QHD (1440p) display. Connected to an older 24" 1080p monitor and update succeeded...

I have been fighting this issue for months. Apparently, there's now a confirmed problem with the BIOS when using HD monitors.  They are now aware of the issue and apparently will be putting the fix in the next BIOS release.  Apparently all the bios testing has been with low res monitors instead of double checking they work in both lower and higher resolution monitors.

The workaround, at this point, which I can confirm that works, is to take a lower resolution monitor, (I used 1620x1280 monitor I had laying around) and then connect it to the primary output and unplug any other monitor.  It will then flash correctly.

Enter the EUFI and disable secure boot.

By the way...
... the BIOS 2.2.0 update, was it just... silently removed? Looks like that:
https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Zoqpr_DvAhUJ:https://www.dell.com/support/driver/en-us/driversdetails%3Fdriverid%3Dxcn10+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=cz&client=firefox-b-d

My 2.0.2 BIOS just can't boot without manual EFI application selection (I have to do this on every power-up)... automatic search just ends with "no bootable media found"... will try playing with that annoying SecureBoot options again, but looks like bug for me...

Had this issue upgrading from 2.0.2 to 2.4.0 on 5820, read about the resolution issue, but we don't have any lower than 1080p monitors with DP to force it to low res, but changing boot mode from UEFI/Secure Boot on to UEFI/Secure Boot off force the update process to low res and it completed flashing.

Hey there...  I tried doing what you mentioned.  I made the USB boot disk.  I put the latest exe file on there.  Hit F12 and it still never got past 0%.  I also figured i'd try what others are saying and hook an older monitor up, but my 5820 has an rtx8000 so it only has displayport outputs, no hdmi.  I'd really like to update my bios but I'm not sure what to do at this point.  From windows the update freezes at 0% and with the boot drive f12 strategy it does the same.  Anyone else figure out anything else?  Thanks!
