Wake on LAN Problem
I'm having a problem getting two scenarios to work on a new Precision 5820/Windows 11/Integrated NIC. The first is to have the computer wake from sleep at a particular time and synchronize with an off-site directory every day over VPN. The second is to be able to use Wake on LAN to wake the computer remotely. I can get both to work individually but I haven't found a way to get both to work with one setup. This is what I have done so far:
- In BIOS I have turned on Wake on LAN and turned off Deep Sleep (S4 and S5)
- The workstation has sleep enabled but hybrid and hibernate are disabled. I do want the computer to sleep if possible and I know disabling sleep and leaving the computer running all the time would solve the problems I'm having.
- With the network adapter:
- Setting to not allow the system to turn off power allows the automatic task to wake the computer and sync as expected but breaks Wake on LAN functionality.
- Setting to allow system to turn off power and turning on Wake on LAN for whatever reason breaks the automated task but does allow Wake on LAN.
- If the option to turn off power is not selected, Wake on LAN is grayed out so you cannot choose both simultaneously.
So it appears that when the workstation is asleep, if the NIC is powered on, Wake on LAN packets will not wake the computer up. It also appears that if the NIC is allowed to be powered off during sleep, the automated task that is set to wake the computer fails to run (verified in Event Viewer - it simply didn't run).
I'm at a loss as to why these two scenarios behave the way they do. Why can't you wake the computer with a magic packet if the NIC is on and why would having the NIC powered off during sleep prevent an automated task from waking the computer? At this point it appears preventing the computer from going to sleep is the only way I can run the automated task reliably and be able to remote into the workstation as needed. If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate the assistance.
