6 bit color depth on all dell laptops

Hi.

I am using 3 different laptops at the moment:

Precision 7720

Latitude 7480

Latitude 5531 (2022 12th gen i7)

They all have the same problem. The windows color depth is 6-bit with latest drivers installed from Dell website. I am assuming this has something to do with Intel Graphic Drivers.

Furthermore I ordered 18 new Latitude for our company, Latitude 5430 also with 12th gen i5 cpu. They all have the same problem. Tested on latest Windows 10 pro and Windows 11.

If I am correct, these panels should be 6bit+FRC, which Intel should read from the EDID of the display and set the color depth accordingly.

- All updates are installed

- All drivers are latest with dell command center

- This is not just a typo in windows settings, there is color banding typical for this color depth.

I can provide you as many logs as you wish and all the service tags you need. One thing is for sure, Precision 7720 is a video workstation and this is unacceptable.

There is no doubt anymore, Dell uses inferior panels that can display only 6 bits per color.

This is not a driver problem, nor an OS problem. The panel is 6bit. I have access on over 80% of all new Dell laptops, this is the case with 90% of them. Only exception might be the new Precision 5562, will have to check that.

Precision 7720 has 6 bit panel from AU Optronics

This is a panel from brand new Latitude 5531 (2022) Intel 12th gen, Iris XE. Low quality panel.
