Gpu upgrade for Dell m6600
Has anyone successfully upgraded the Dell m6600 dedicated GPU to something newer like a gtx 980m?, My Firepro m8900 is really struggling at this point and I think it is dying.

Unfortunately it may be time to retire the old M6600. The M6600 was very restrictive is what GPU could be used, so you may already be at the most powerful option on that machine.
You may want to look into upgrading to a M6700 or M6800. Either of these will allow you to upgrade to Maxwell series Nvidia cards including the GTX 980M or Quadro M5000M
If you go one more step up to either the Precision 7710 or 7720, you will be able to use Pascal cards up to the Quadro P5000.
And finally the Precision 7730 and 7740 can use up to the Quadro RTX 5000 (The 7750 does this also, but the GPU shape changed so they are not cross compatible)

Actually, there are some better and faster GPU's that can work in the Dell Precision M6600, like the Nvidia Quadro 4000m or the AMD FirePro M6100, that can actually work pretty well (though note that these GPU's aren't very new). Still the Dell Precision M6600 is very restrictive on what GPU you can use, and I would consider buying the more recent Precision m6700 and m6800, which are much more upgradable in terms of the GPU.

i have an M6600 with a 2960xm, 16gb 1600 ram, all SSD storage, upgraded AC/Bluetooth card, and am upgraded to the newest A18 bios. I can currently run the R9 m290x 4gb GPU properly on the 240W power brick, and im using a custom fan program to be able to crank up both fans to keep the system cool. with the stock BIOS fan control, the system quickly would overheat, as the curves are meant for quiet and power savings instead of heavy brute force cooling. i have attempted to run a GTX 980M 8GB and i cannot get it to load windows 10. it goes past the BIOS screen, gets the windows loading screen, and then just sits there. and that's where it sits today. however...
i also have a M4600 that i play around with, and it is running a custom A19 bios that was written by a Dell software engineer, and it allowed me to run a newer card in it. so there may be a custom bios floating around out there that can allow this machine to run a newer card like the 980. i'm not keen on replacing mine because it can handle 3 SSDs (if you use the pcie ssd slot) and the 2960xm is faster than a 7700hq in most tasks. my M4600 is using the 2860qm, also a blitzing quick cpu.

@GhomerGhamer did you need to mod the vBios or was it plug and play for the R9 M290X in the M6600, i just got one for cheap and want a GPU upgrade.
