Precision 7740 Replacement battery no good
I've bought many Dell laptops, and multiple replacement batteries. The last one I bought was rubbish. After 4 months, the battery life (like-for-like usage) is at the same level the original battery after 4 years. Its now out of warranty but its disappointing to need another replacement so soon. I've tried to contact support for advice but can't make it through the bot wall!

Please can you confirm the Make Model and OS, along with any configuration details like touch screen, backlit keyboard, SFF or tower etc etc.

Precision 7740 laptop running Win 11. Backlit keyboard. No touch screen.
The point is that its a like-for-like environment. One battery lasted 4 years; one lasted 4 months. Same machine, same environment, same usage pattern. In my mind, the only difference is the battery.

In my mind...
Was it a DELL or lookee-likee replacement?
Is there a fault on the Main Board causing the early demise of the replacement (and perhaps the previous),and don't rule out the PSU?
4 months, still under warranty/guarantee.

Genuine Dell. A main board fault is possible. How would I investigate?
The battery report still suggests that battery is OK, so the customer service bots declined to get involved.
I've attached the battery report that shows predicted battery life of 5+ hours plus recent usage report of < 2 hours.

As this is a system that's about 6-7 years old, even if it was sold as "new", it's very possible the battery could be aged -- batteries deteriorate from age as much as they do from use.
On the battery is the Dell part number -- post that and someone can look at the string and determine the date of manufacture of the battery.

It could still be multiple years old -- you will need to supply the complete Dell part number on the battery, not just the order number, for anyone to advise.
Generally, new OEM batteries are produced for 3-4 years following a system's release, meaning the battery could date from anywhere between 3 years ago and 6-7 years ago - in other words, it may have been sold as new but could have been old stock.

If this was sold from a stock of old batteries (as new), how can I ensure it doesn't happen again if I order another one?

That battery was made in August 2025, so it's not that old -- under a year. That's assuming it is OEM.
How could a battery that's was purchased only four months ago be out of warranty? The warranty from Dell should be one year.

The bot army will only approve a replacement if their diagnostics think the battery is faulty, which is why I've been desperate to speak to a human. Any suggestions on how to proceed?

What are the design and current charge capacities for the battery?
Run powercfg /batteryreport at a command prompt with administrative privilege.

Design capacity = 97 Wh
Full charge capacity = 83 Wh
So, not too bad. The calculated battery life is still 5 hrs vs 6-7 hrs when new. The actual battery life is now 2-3 hrs vs 6-7 hrs when new. These numbers are apparent to me because I spend extended periods on battery. More than 3 hrs is good enough; less than 3 hrs and I need a new battery.
The Dell Power Manager says the battery health = excellent.

That's about 15% loss of capacity, which I doubt will qualify for replacement.
The battery runtime is determined by load on the battery -- including both the CPU and GPU use and the screen type and brightness, along with the power settings. It's not inconceivable that you could see limited battery runs if you have a power-hungry discrete GPU in use and a high resolution screen. What happens to the battery runs if you increase the level of power conservation and disable the discrete GPU in favor of the integrated one?

@sneezo All spare parts purchased from Dell.com will have a 1 year warranty from the date of purchase. Using your order number, you should be able to get to tech support. The alternative contact method is using the Orders page:
Support will run the usual diagnostics. Troubleshooting generally consists of the following steps:
While the PPID does show the battery was manufactured last August, the warranty itself is dependent on the purchase date. If Support does replace the battery, there is no guarantee that it will be any newer. That said, a replacement battery is covered under warranty for the remainder of the original limited battery warranty or 90 days, whichever is greater.
