Precision m4800 GPU Upgrade
I still have my old Precision m4800 as a daily use laptop, i just love it, i have done some upgrades to it as well, mine came with a 4k screen and the core i7 4940mx, i upgraded the ram sticks to 32gb at 2133mhz without any issue, and i upgraded the GPU to a Quadro M2200, as far as i'm concerned, to install drivers on a laptop with an upgraded gpu, the drivers must be modified first or they won't install, but this wasn't my case, i got the M2200 from ebay, and literally the upgrade was plug and play, no driver mod requiered and it's working flawlessly.
Is there a way to know why it was so easy to upgrade? Perhaps the latest bios added support for GPU upgrade? as far as i'm concerned, the M2200 is the best possible upgrade for this model, but i wonder if a more powerful gpu can be installed.
Any info regarding this will be much appreciated!

The M2200 is the most powerful Dell MXM-A card. To go more powerful you would need to roll the dice and try for a HP Pascal or Turing card (Newer HP Nvidia cards do not have the Vbios on the MXM card)
Same thing happened when i stuck an Alienware GTX 980M in my old Precision M6700. Drivers installed with no mod needed. When I went to upgrade to newer drivers they needed modding.

@Bulwyf Dell's official documentation shows M4800 supports ram clock up to 1866MHz.
Could you confirm through any software if your ram set runs at 2133MHz?

Thanks for the reply, since the GPU upgrade i have done several driver upgrades and a couple of new windows instalations, still the drivers work flawlessly with no inf mods. I got lucky i guess lol

Hi. I also have a m4800 (only i7-4810MQ processor though). May I ask what you paid for the video upgrade? I'm seeing around $300 (which is more than I paid for this refurbished system) Is the M2200 a motherboard thing or a card you slide into a slot? Recently my system has been a challenge with games and anything video intensive. I really wonder if loading the latest drivers/BIOS A26 contributed to this problem. Thank you

My m2200 cost me $200 in ebay, had to ship it all the way to Chile lol, i got it cheap tho, i had to wait a couple of months searching this GPU until i found a good price for it since is kinda expensive, and no, is not soldered to the motherboard, is modular, so is like replacing your ram sticks, you just have to put it in the pci slot in your laptop.

i'm sorry for the late reply, indeed the official DDR speed supported by the m4800 is 1866Mhz (only using 16gb) but that is probably due to the hardware limitations of that time, i'm currently running 32GB Kingston Hyper X RAM Kit at 2133Mhz with no issues
Hope this screenshots of CPU-Z and task manager helps!

I have installed the Quadro m2200 card into my Dell Precision m4800 and it shows in device manager. Only problem is it shows that it has reported problems (error code 43). I have Win11 but also tried 10 with the same result.
I have verified the card is good as I ran Linux with it and Linux was happy, also ran a render test on the web in linux. The fan kicked on and I could feel the heat coming from the gpu cooler, telling me the gpu was working. Kinda stumped because I thought this was just supposed to work

I was having issues as well. My solution was using regular thermal paste, as I was attempting to use liquid metal. Once I replaced it traditional thermal paste it fired right up after driver install. You want to download the drivers on NVIDIA's website, dells driver installer encountered issues. It is under Quadro/RTX mobile in the driver install page. Hope this helps!

A problem with my system is (Wifi) and (Cpu) and (Gpu)Wifi you can fix just get a Wifi Transmitter or a Ethernet Lan Cord to run tasks faster and Cpu is running slowly and mostly if I'm running a tab the CPU cooks and maybe is just my thermal paste or my fan needs to be modified or off brand CPU fan that runs better and do performance faster and the CPU fan is acting like its going to explode, Gpu I wish I could have just the later GPUs but that just might just break and its not worth it thats what's the problem with mine.
Sorry I'm 15 Im not very good with this stuff

@BJGamer Goodness, has it been this long since I was experimenting with this laptop? Time flies; I no longer use this laptop daily, it ended up with a Quadro P5200 after a lot of reverse engineering and modding the vBIOS. The issue was a bad motherboard (due to my attempt to use liquid metal). As far as Windows 11 on it, that's easy, I'd look online. One method is making a Windows 10 installation disk and replacing the install.wim with the image from a Windows 11 disk. I wish companies would make laptops like this with newer hardware; we can only dream. Best of luck!

Hello, I know I am late to the party. But I am regarding a question with the Quadro M2200, I just recently replaced the thermal paste with grizzly kryonaut, and it seems to be running 76 Celsius on a certain game I am running. I am just curious to see if this is normal load with Dell Precision M4800s whenever they have had a Quadro M2200 upgrade. I am simply asking because the fans kick on- pretty loud at 66 Celsius, And it is very noticable even when i have headphones on. I have a Intel Core I7 4810mq With the max 32gb ram.
