Thunderbolt Controller driver issue on Precision 7520

I have seen a few threads but never found an answer. For some reason the firmware update utility to update the firmware on thunderbolt port on the precision 7520 gives an error stating the thunderbolt controller driver is not installed and go to dell web to download latest driver. I have the latest driver installed already which is 1.41.1193.0, A11. I have tried using TB16 and WD19 and all it does is power the laptop and no usb or display devices work. I found a thread stating that the firmware is useable on older versions of windows and I went ahead and installed windows 10 version 1803 for the purpose but the utility wont update the firmware nor will the dock drivers make the docking station work.

Am I missing something? Are the thunderbolt docks not compatible with this device? It has thunderbolt 3 but is having firmware version 02.0B and trying to update to version 46.

This is not an obsolete device and is windows 11 compatible but this issue has started to give me heartache. It is out of warranty so that option is out of sight.

I am using windows 10 on it and the port seems to be same from beginning. It lights up the docking station connector but all it does is power the device. Strange thing is that when I try to open firmware utility, a display topology is getting recognized for a few seconds and then goes away. The firmware is old and wont update for thunderbolt.

The Precision 7520 is not Windows 11 compliant -- the CPU is 7th generation (Windows 11 requires 8th).

Was the Thunderbolt port working correctly under Windows 10?

is the port in fact a Thunderbolt port (which was optional on these models -- not standard)?

Or is it a USB 3.x port?

It seems to be thunderbolt as much as I know and thunder sign appears next to the usb - c connector as well as dell system info says i7 with thunderbolt 3.

Hmmmm.... so here's a question. why is the Precision 5520 (and the Micorosft Surface Pro 2) running the i7-7820HQ processor compliant, yet the Precision 7520 is not ? Looking at the specs, I struggle to see what the issue is. Microsoft state "

  • Intel® Core™ 7820HQ (only select devices that shipped with modern drivers based on Declarative, Componentized, Hardware Support Apps (DCH) design principles, including Surface Studio 2)"

Now, given that the 5520 launched in January 2017 and the 7520 in March the same year, one would imagine that if the drivers for the former were built to DCH standards then the same would apply to the latter.. Moreover, if it is simply a matter of certification on the drivers, by Dell, that is a fairly simple task to remedy. Dell boasted that the Precision 7520 was 'The world’s most powerful 15 inch mobile workstation.' when it was launched. It doesn't speak well if the model was built using drivers that were substandard. Surely it's time to get this fixed.

Dell Precision 7520 has Thunderbolt 3 and computer runs fine Windows 10.

@dellfanWhy run outdated 1803 when 21H2 is out?

Check your Device Manager when TB dock is connected.

Device Manager - System  devices - Thunderbolt(TM) Controller - 15D9

Windows 11 is not officially supported because of the too old 7th generation CPU type.

It can be installed but you are on your own. I have one 7520 & Win 11 at home. This is connected to Dell TB16 and dock charges the laptop.

Latest Intel Thunderbolt Firmware Update version is 4.46.155.003, A08, release date 30 Jul 2021. This will show as Thunderbolt version 46.

Latest Intel Thunderbolt Controller Driver version is 1.41.1193.0, A11, release date 05 Nov 2021.

Last part of the puzzle is the Thunderbolt Control Center from Microsoft Store, version 1.0.34.0.

Was it so you need to install first Thunderbolt Controller Driver before you can update Thunderbolt Firmware?

I can connect to TB16 Jabra USB headset some USB stick. Some new USB sticks do not work.

Realtek USB Audio DCH driver and Realtek USB GbE Ethernet controller driver must be installed like always with TB and USB Type-C docks.
