1700 Laser - Imaging drum message

My problem is that after replacing the imaging drum (prompted by seeing repeated message window alerts), I continue to have the alerts pop up along with a flasing yellow indicator light on the printer. Is there some sort of reset procedure that I'm not aware of, or does this indicate a true problem. Any feedback would be appreciated.

once you replace the drum in the 1700 series printers, you also need to re-set the drum count...... try the steps below :
power off and open front door

hold down the continue button as you power on printer leaving front door open

when error light comes on release continue and close front door.

toner low, load paper, ready, and continue will all be lit.

press cancel slowly 4 times or until just toner low lights up. each time you press cancel, the light sequence should change

when just toner low is lit, press and hold continue button until lights cycle up and down in sequence.

release continue.. toner low will be lit again

turn printer off, wait 10 secs or so and then back on

press continue button to print off settings page and check under cartridge information, photoconductor value is 0K (zero K)

This succesfully reset my printer and the photoconductor value is 0K.

Then I had a paper jam.   Turned off the printer.   Removed the Drum & toner.  Removed the jammed paper.

Put the Drum & toner back into the printer.   Turned on the printer.

The Replace Drum light is flashing and the Error light is lit.

If I repeat all the steps above; the printer will reset and print; until the next time the drum is removed then the error light re-appears.

How can I permanantly reset this error.

I replaced the drum two weeks ago and threw away the old one and all the paperwork.

I can reset the counters per the instructions located here onine.   Continue button power on, etc etc etc.  And the printer will work.

But if I remove the DRUM and TONER and reinsert... The flashing light for Replace Drum comes back on; along with the error light.

It is time consuming to continue to reset the printer just to get it to print.   Once reset it prints fine.

Bill,

Sorry for that last answer..... I mis-read it myself.

Did you get a tech sheet with the replacemnt part? It should tell you exactly how to reset the drum counter.

Please let me know......

I opened a new drum and also a new Toner for a Dell 1700/1710.

Installed the drum; and followed the instructions (which state hold down cancel. blah blah blah).

I closed the door.    The Flashing: Replace Drum light still flashes and the Error light is lit.

The only way to reset this is to follow the original insructions in this tread posted by Tygereeye.

hold down the continue button as you power on printer leaving front door open   /   when error light comes on release continue and close front door   /  toner low, load paper, ready, and continue will all be lit /  cancel   blah blah blah

Printer works when powered off and on.

I printed settings page and checked the cartridge information, photoconductor value is 0K

So I assume everyone in the Dell Forums / Tech support knows what they are talking about.

I power of the printer.  Power it back on.   Amazingly it continues to work.

To further test the printer and make sure it will work when I give it back to the user (which was a G-D Mistake); I remove the Drum and Toner (as they would if they experience a paper jam).   I reinstall the Drum and Toner.    Low and Behold the G-D "Flashing: Replace Drum" light still flashes and the Error light is lit.

A brand drum and toner installed.   The photoconductor value is 0K.   The printer works fine and prints fine until the Drum is removed and reinstalled (which happens every 2-4 weeks when their is a paper jam)

What can be done to bypass the drum light in an easier manner.

The 1710 and 1720 are reset fairly easy by using this procedure:

"After you replace the imaging drum, you should reset the imaging drum's counter. To reset the counter, press and hold the Cancel button until all lights flash in sequence."

However, I do not believe this is the same procedure for the 1700....... researching. That said, try it, you can't hurt anything.

Not sure, but I think "Tygereeye" may have left something out. Here are the STEP-by-STEP instructions:

1. Turn off the printer.
2. Open the front cover.
3. Press and hold the CONTINUE button while powering on the printer.
4. Continue to press the button until the lights cycle up and down and only the "!" remains lit.
5. Release the button and close the cover.
6. The Continue, Ready, Toner, and Paper lights should be on.
7. Press and hold the CONTINUE button until all the lights sequence up/dwn; the Printer Settings Configuration page will print and return to the pattern described in step 6. (this step is not really required, but it does give you a selection printout and instructions)
8. Slowly press and release CANCEL until only the Toner light is on. (refer to the page just printed; this selects the Counter reset)
9. Press and HOLD the CONTINUE button until all the lights sequence up/dwn. This activates the item selected in step 8.
10. Press and hold the CANCEL button until all the lights sequence up/dwn; you will be returned to the pattern described in step 6.
11. Power the printer OFF, wait for 10 secs, power on.
