1815dn - Email Server Settings: Unable to save login name

We just purchased a 1815dn and I am trying to set it up to automatically email all received faxes. Our email server requires authentication to send emails.

So I go into the menu for "Email Setup" and click on "SMTP Server Settings". I type in the IP address, click authentication and fill everything out. Now, our login name has the underscore character "_" and we have to type in the full email address. Therefore, the login names contains an underscore, the @ character and a period "." for the .com part. Upon submitting the information, the next page says that there is an error with the login name and doesn't save it.

Now, under "Email Alert Setup" I have the same settings saved in there and it works with no problems.

Is there anything I need to try? Is there a new firmware to fix this?

Thank you for your help,
Michael

@lochi009
Dell must have their reason not to publish the new firmware. Furthermore I'm not looking
for any legal argument with Dell. Stick to Gina as see is working on it.

@Tom__Hall
No new drivers, just a new firmware.

Gina:

Is the latest firmware -- Dell1815dn_V1.03.03.05_smdall.hd -- available on Dell's web site?

Or do I need to request such firmware on a CD?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Good News - the firmware that we've all been waiting for is now available online. Please be sure to follow the instructions carefully.

Gina:

I'm unable to find the Mac OS X version of the firmware; where do I find such file?

Thanks in advance.

I have checked and the firmware update is not OS dependent.

Although my printer is connected -- via USB -- directly to my MacBook, I am also able to access the printer via standard http:// protocol.  As you suggested, I just read the instructions for a 'Network-Connected Printer' (rather than the 'USB-Connected Printer' instructions which I had previously read).  I will follow the 'Network-Connected' instructions later tonight; if I have any problems, I will report back.

Thank you very much, Miguel!

I think what he means is that there is no Mac auto upgrade program to run on a computer connected through the USB port on the printer like there is for windows (at least from what I recall seeing).

Richard, you probably should follow the instructions for upgrading through the network. The download that ends with extension .hd is for upgrading through the web interface built-in to the printer. There are instructions on the download page on how to do this.

By the way, thank you for helping us on this issue. Too bad it took 6 months since my first post on 7/26/2006 to get the firmware posted. But it is greatly appreciated. The printer that I have is now up and fully functional with this update.

I too am sorry that it took so long, to get this firmware to you all but I'm glad it's out there. I've already escalated the issue with the .exe file not being able to be used for MAC. I'm glad that you found the instructions on how to update the firmware via a network, I was just about to post that for you. Thank you for helping me understand about the MAC I've never owned one or used one so your expertise is much appreciated.

Many thanks!

Last night, I was able to easily access the printer using standard http:// protocol; I was also able -- again with ease -- to access the *.hd file; the upload to the Dell 1815dn was quick; the printer rebooted; at the conclusion, the 1815dn was assigned a new network address which I found using the menu-based interface on the printer's LCD.

Gina:

The firmware works quite well; early this morning, I was able to use the 1815dn to scan a several page document and send via e-mail over our Mac network; it was easy and worked great.

A well-intentioned suggestion: Dell may wish to either (i) remove the *.exe file from the Mac OS driver page for the 1815dn, or (ii) elevate the *.hd file on the page -- moving the *.exe file below it; you may also wish to suggest adding more text to the *.hd file description to direct users to such driver file first.

No need to write back; thanks again for your help here, Gina.

And thanks again, Miguel3239!
