C1765nf Color MFP sleep problems

I currently have this printer setup like any other printer on the schools network through a print server and deployed using active directory and group policy.  The problem comes from new printers being "energy conscious".  I have only found this to be a pain in <ADMIN NOTE: Substitute character removed as per TOU>.  As it sits idle for an hour it will go into sleep mode.  When a user submits a print job, the printer should wake up and print, however, this wont happen.  It will show the printer offline and the job will store till someone pushes a button on the printer.  This should not happen.  I have messed with the setting on the printer to the max and cannot turn off sleep.  Or find a toggle that will definitely make sure that network will wake it up.  Anyone have a solution to this model or similar model?

I had about my 8th call with Dell Tech support last night. This time they tried giving the printer a static IP address on my wireless router. This took about an hour and a half. I was hopeful that this would work. But this morning it still would not recognize the printer and it did not come out of sleep mode. Back to the drawing board.

since i have gotten these printers back in Jan. and always just download the latest driver/firmware where ever there is an issue. and so far the same result. not sure what a driver would do when the hardware shuts communication off completely.

what i have tried also is to constantly monitor the status page, ping via a static IP, did an SNMP walk to see what i can poll with, and ended up with 10-15 different sensors that i can poll, tried Wake-On-LAN, sending it a fax, would wake up and only print that fax, still not able to print or ping.

In November they released and updated set of drivers for the device.

No word on whether they address the problem (in fact, no word on what they change/fix, which is unusual. Dell driver updates typically include a list of "fixes").

Has anyone tried the new drivers and seen if they made a difference (I know it seems like the kind of thing you'd address via a firmware update, but sometimes you can do something to compensate in the device driver)?

any updates from anyone? it's still happening and i have now been forced to go around the office and manually power cycling these printers three times a day (morning/lunch/evening) PLEASE fix this. it's becoming a joke now.

Just bought one of these units and it'll be going back to the supplier and replaced with a non Dell machine because of this ridiculous feature. A really good machine rendered unusable by a silly design flaw :-(

it's very sad because if it is connected to a computer via USB, it's perfect. prints are nice and sharp. Super easy to change out toner on the user level. over all a nice printer. but it turns into a useless cube as soon as it goes to sleep.  i want to return all the ones that i had purchased.

I was able to make the C1765nfw wake up and print over a network (wired). I left it overnight and then came back in the morning. The Windows 8 printer status (CTRL +W -> Devices and Printers -> Click on your printer -> Bottom "Status") showed it in "Power Save Mode", I then printed a document to this printer. The status changed to "Warming Up" and then it printed the document after about 30 seconds.

I do not know exactly what solved the problem, but I will list every step I performed prior to this working function.

1. Install the "Dell C1765nfw Color MFP Software Suite and Drivers": http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/dell-c1765nfw/drivers

2. Restart computer.

3. Delete the printer it installs.

4. Click Add Printer button at the top of the Devices and Printers window. Select your printer via IP and add it.

5. Right click your printer in Devices and Printers window. Click on "Printer properties" and then click the button "Change Properties". Navigate to ports, uncheck the port it's currently on and check the port aptly named after your printers IP. It should say "Standard TCP/IP Port". If you go to Configure Port, the Port Name and Printer name or IP Address is set to your printer's IP. The protocol is LPR. The LPR queue name is "lp" and the LPR Byte Counting Enabled checkbox is checked. SNMP Status Enabled was checked, but I unchecked it on the advice of someone on this forum. Also on Printer properties -> Ports confirm Enable Bidirectional support is checked. Click OK.

6. In your taskbar find the Status Monitor Console. Dell installs this with the "Dell C1765nfw Color MFP Software Suite and Drivers". Right click it and go to Printer Selection. Select your newly created printer. After it blinks a few times, it should show you a window with the Estimated Toner Levels.

7. Open the Dell C1765 - Tool Box. It should open up and show you Printer Information about your printer like Service Tag, Firmware Version, etc.

8. Go to the webpage and set the "Power Saver Timer - Sleep" to 30 minutes and the "Power Saver Timer - Deep Sleep" to 6 minutes. This is under Printer Settings -> Printer Settings -> System Settings. Click Apply New Settings. Default username is admin, and no password. You may also need to click the button for "Restart Printer".

That's everything I did between last night and this morning's successful print after a deep sleep. There may be some steps that are not required. If any of you try this, please report back on any steps that are extraneous.

It is amazing that I have to turn off the printer and back on in order to use it over the network. After some time it stops responding to pings and that is the only way to get it to work. Call it what you want but the term is "defective"

I had Dell support looking at it. At one point the tech is trying to log into my Firewall by guessing passwords. I asked why and he said so he can do a DHCP reservation. First I asked him why he thought my SonicWall was DHCP server? No matter how hard I tried, I could not get him to understand that you do not need a DHCP reservation when the printer has a static IP address.

I finally had to hang up on him.

@JDREWS , so the software you have this running on is windows 8 correct?

do you have just the one printer or multiple?

@ADRATCH1, don't know what support you called, but would call back and get another tech.

I have the full software installed on Windows 7.

I don't see how that can make a difference. The printer network shuts down. I cannot ping it unless I reboot it.

I would call in but it appears this is a problem that everyone has and support can't fix it.

@JDREWS, hmmm.. interesting. i tried to do a SNMP walk to find every measurable stat, but nothing working on my side. wonder if that win8 box is shutdown, and then the printer goes into it's deep sleep where their are no pings coming back. then fire up the win8 box and see if it will then somehow "wake up" the printer for a print job. My current solution is super low tech, i grabbed a few auto power timers and it cuts power to the printer for one minute every hour. I have 5 of these monsters connected to a printer server that is then shared through out the company. so as u can see have my tech guys running round resetting printers is quite comical.

I should also mention that I don't have any other Dell printer software open besides the system tray. My guess is that the Dell Status Monitor Console (system tray) or a service called "Dell Status Monitor Database" is making the SNMP Calls.

Every 5 seconds it's making a SNMP query (GET) to this OID: 1.3.6.1.4.1.26266.886.300.369.8531.1.1.0
